Different air times between calendar, show page & episode page

XoLindsayoX wrote 8 years ago: 1

On my calendar, Travelers shows it's airing at 8:00 (20:00) but it airs at 9:00 (21:00). The episode page & the show page both have the correct time so there's nothing to edit to make it show up correctly in the calendar. This is not the first time this has happened. I can't remember what show it was but I know it was discussed here. Not sure if or how it was fixed...

Here are screenshots of the 3 pages with 2 airtimes:

Yea, that's the one. Thanks. Not sure why it does that with some Canadian shows...

Apparently because the show's timezone (EST) is different from yours. You're never answered David's question in the previous thread, so one can only guess...

It's not different since I'm in Philly which is EST

My guess is the Canadian shows are on Maritime time as opposed to Eastern, so they would be an hour off from you in Philly.

I'm not very familiar with the situation in Canada, so I need someone local to weigh in.

Canada has 5 major timezones: Pacific, Mountain, Central, Eastern, and Atlantic. The way I understood it, all 5 timezones have dedicated local TV feeds and thus we use the earliest (most eastern) feed - Atlantic - because that's where episodes are broadcast first.

However, at least for this show (on the Showcase network) this doesn't appear to be the case. The episode premieres at 9PM Eastern, but in Atlantic it premieres at 10PM instead; simulcasted with the Eastern feed. Since we currently have Canada tied to the Atlantic timezone we need to set an airtime of 22:00 for everything to work correctly.

But if it turns out that episodes rarely ever premiere in Atlantic one our ahead of the Eastern feed, and networks predominantly advertise the Eastern times, then perhaps I should change Canada to be tied to the Eastern timezone instead. In that case, the airtime of 21:00 would be correct.

Anyone?

There is a sixth time zone (Newfoundland) that is only the island and Labrador. It may be Travelers is produced there or airs there first so it uses the earlier time? American shows will sometimes air in Newfoundland before they air in the Atlantic timezone as well.

So would that be why it shows 8:00 on the calendar and 9:00 on the episode page & show page? I'm so confused with their time zones. Someone had mentioned that if they are on the West Coast they can watched the East Coast feeds, very odd.

Would it not be better to be able to change the timezone for each network?

The show page always list it as what's been entered.

If you've got Display airdates on the calendar and schedule in your local timezone checked in your Site Preferences then it will convert it between the country's timezone and your timezone when you view the calendar and the schedule.

Well, if you don't have it selected it doesn't show an airtime at all. I have it checked. Not sure why that would show a different time in the calendar when the time zones are the same.

Moved this thread to the Chat forums, but I'm still looking for an expert on Canadian broadcasting to weigh in!

Yea,Thanks! I added some others out of Curiosity (Killjoys & Motive) and they show on the Calendar an hour earlier than on the show/episode pages, so it seems to be all Canadian shows

Just a quickie question about how this is handled for US viewers/stations? Is a show that airs on, for example, NBC at 8pm eastern being listed for California viewers as airing at 5pm even though it will not air in California until 8pm pacific time?

Handling Canada different than the US just messes things up for many shows ... as an example, The Agenda on TVO at 8pm is an Ontario show that first airs at 8pm eastern ... anyone watching in Atlantic Canada is watching at 9pm Atlantic time yet the show gets listed in the calendar as starting at 7pm ... a start time only valid for those in the Central time zone.
