Main characters sorted

Could there be a possibility for sorting main characters? The regular actors are not sorted at some shows. If you click on Cast Appearances during an episode, the actors are unsorted. Would like to see the most important actors at number one.

If you mean for an overall series, cast (and characters) are listed by number of appearances, most appearances first. If you mean by episode, then I think guest cast is random, but main cast is still listed by who has appeared the most first.

Doesn't looks like it. For example, https://www.tvmaze.com/episodes/1727938/his-dark-materials-1x05-the-lost-boy/castappearances, https://www.tvmaze.com/shows/7626/his-dark-materials/cast and https://www.tvmaze.com/shows/7626/his-dark-materials/characters all sorted differently, and only the latter appears to be sorted by the number of appearances.

I think there should be the option, "Sort by". Alphabetically by character name, by actor's name, by appearances, by season etc.

I mean actually when a new series is announced, a number of actors are mentioned who get a role in a series. These actors are then added randomly but are not listed in order. If you then tick the actors for an episode, they are listed in the order they are added. So it would be great if you could sort the main cast by numbering per season.

Every show with more than just the opening few episodes. sorts by most appearances first.

Examples:

Hawaii Five-0 characters
Hawaii Five-0 cast

Stargate Atlantis characters
Stargate Atlantis cast
(since Rodney McKay and John Sheppard have the same number of appearances, it can switch which one is listed first)

NCIS characters
NCIS cast

If characters/actors have the same number of appearances, then it will still randomise those specific listings.

Well, I see that as a problem. One would expect a consistency between different pages. After all, there's not so many shows with a hundreds of episodes :)

Anyways, manual sorting (as any other customization tool) would be good to have.

Manual sorting does indeed seem like a good solution. That way you can see which actors are the most important at every show.

From the last i read, it's always been random either for cast or guest, whether at episode or show level.

I remember on tvrage, there was the possibility to manually sort main cast and guest cast. For main cast, it was not attached to season but show, so it would change all seasons cast order which was not great.

If it were possible to sort per season or just alphabetically, it would be great.

It is indeed true that with TVrage both the main characters and the guest appearances could be sorted. If that possibility were to come, it would be fantastic.

Well, it's a good solution if someone does it. :) There were just as many pages at TVRage where no one bothered, as ones where they did.

Hi guys, already made a case out of it to align tnt's example with how it currently is on the show page. (Automated sorting based on amount of appearances.)

Don't even think about doing this type of thing manually...

I understand that automatic sorting by number of appearances is the easiest of a show, but I mainly refer to the episodes. For example, the Dutch show Goede Tijden, Slechte Tijden is a long-running show and has now had thirty seasons. The cast was randomly added to this show.

If you look at this episode https://www.tvmaze.com/episodes/1757499/goede-tijden-slechte-tijden-30x75-af delivery-6140/castappearances these actors are in random order. Because the actress Jette van der Meij should be number one in this case. So it's mainly about the episodes of a show. So it would not be a bad idea if they can be sorted per episode.

It would be very much appreciated to have consistent sorting in all this. In a way that can be explained as a data policy. Allowing manual sorting based on importance is an invitation to edit wars :) Plus it is a ton of extra work before all the sorting is done on existing shows, seasons etc.

Guys, when I've suggested manual sorting I didn't mean that it would be literally "manual", when you place all cast members in some order manually. What I've meant is a predefined list of sort orders ("A-Z by actor", "A-Z by character", "By number of appearances", "By year joined" etc.), where you could manually set one of the sorting options that fits you best.

Fully manual way could work if it will be done at the user level, i.e. every user could sort them however they like, and that order will be saved for this user only (as an additional feature it could be shared with other users to use).

This is now consistent at least.

Thank you! This is much better IMO :)
