Ratings Roundup Week of January 20, 2019

CBS had renewal news last week. The Neighborhood, FBI, and Magnum PI were all renewed for second season. Magnum had a nice boost from the AFC game on a special Sunday night airing. However, the bump didn't carry over to the show's regular night; the Monday night numbers were a tenth lower than the previous week. The Eye also premiered Big Brother: Celebrity Edition. The reality show opened well, but ratings sank through the week. Fam ran two episodes last week to middling numbers. It seems a bit early for the network to be burning through episodes, but the writing may be on the wall.

ABC wrapped The Connors last week. The comedy series finished up two tenths from the previous week and should be an easy renewal. How To Get Away with Murder and Splitting Up Together both lost a tenth neither of them could really afford. Otherwise number were even with the previous week for most ABC programs.

NBC execs were happy to see Manifest bounce back, up a tenth from the previous week. Brooklyn Nine-Nine was also up a tenth and should be renewed assuming it holds where it is. New Amsterdam was steady. The Good Place wrapped its season even with the previous week.

FOX had another good week for The Masked Singer, the competition show was up a tenth. Predictably, The Passage dropped after its premiere, losing three tenths. It should be fine assuming it doesn't lose any more. The Orville appeared to level off last week, matching numbers for previous weeks. While not as high as season one, the show should still see a renewal for a third season. The Gifted is likely done.

The CW had a bit of good news last week in that Roswell, New Mexico held its premiere audience. The Flash was up a tenth, Arrow returned at about where it was before the holidays, Supergirl was down from where it was before the break, even without the Elseworlds boost.

If you want to puzzle on something, figure out how Madam Secretary manages to get renewed year after year with a 0.6 or lower. It's always at the bottom of the network numbers, but it still gets renewed. (and Sunday night is not considered a dead night (like Friday) as far as networks are concerned.) [shrug]

Library building. Short term loss for long term profit is the only explanation, IMHO. Streamers have a voracious appetite for content.

Yep, CW renewed everything except All American, I think it's safe to say that one is done (Roswell hasn't been on long enough to say).

Networks have always had an eye on the secondary market, whatever that market may be. Reality is ratings drop year to year, they always have. There are currently three shows consistently above a 2.0 (This Is Us, The Big Bang Theory, and The Masked Singer) Only a few more that are consistently at a 1.0 or higher. As long as a show is at or above the scripted average, chances are, it will get renewed.

Magnum is "only" a 0.7-0.9, but it pulls in a regular 5-7 million viewers. That's a win as far as the network is concerned. The CW renewed a buttload of shows, as expected.

I'll admit I was wrong about Magnum getting a second season. On the bright side, the renewal has made me adjust my thinking on "broadcast" TV networks. I do not believe they are still in the ratings business, it's now, IMO, a side business. They are now, or more accurately their sister studios are in the business of building a library of content they can license to streamers and/or use in their own streaming operations. They may lose money on the initial broadcast run but they are looking ahead 10~20 years or even the full 95 years current copyright grants to future earnings ... an unusual occurrence for western corporations that more often are not looking much further than the next fiscal quarter and how much the CEO et al can earn in bonuses.
