Ratings Roundup for the Week of January 3, 2021

Due to events in Washington DC last Wednesday, schedules for that night across ABC, CBS, and NBC were preempted for news coverage.

ABC premiered a new season of The Rookie along with a couple of freshman game shows. Season three of Nathan Fillion's cop drama opened down a couple of tenths from where it ended last season. Since it is rare for a third season show not to be renewed, fans have a bit of a free pass this season with regard to ratings. Of the two new game shows, The Chase opened strong, while The Hustler was only so-so. Like reality shows, game shows are cheaper to produce, so chances are unless the numbers completely tank, both will likely be renewed, though possibly moved off to summer schedules once filming returns to normal

NBC premiered Mr Mayor last week to middling numbers. The Peacock hasn't had much luck with freshman comedies the last couple of years, time will tell if this one makes the cut. Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist opened its second season up a tenth from where it ended last season. This Is Us ran its first new episode since November, and apparently, fans didn't get the memo, as the episode chalked up its lowest ratings numbers to date. The show is already renewed for next season, so hopefully, it's just a blip.

FOX had several premieres last week. Animated comedy, Great North, and live-action comedy Call Me Kat opened well thanks to an NFL overrun. Unfortunately, for Call Me Kat, the show's number dropped significantly once it aired on its normal Thursday night. Name That Tune premiered to okay numbers. Last Man Standing opened low and stayed low when it moved to its normal night. It's going to go out with a whimper it seems as FOX announced in the fall this would be the last season for the Tim Allen comedy.
