Ratings Roundup for the Week of March 19, 2023

FOX announced renewals for Accused and Alert: Missing Persons Unit last week. Fans of Accused celebrated by losing one hundred thousand viewers. 9-1-1 topped the rating chart for the network, up almost a tenth of a rating point, though its viewer numbers were the same as the previous week. 9-1-1: Lone Star was down in both ratings and viewers, losing one hundred thousand viewers. Fantasy Island was conspicuous in its absence for the second week in a row. What could be worse for fans is that the sort of programming that has been taking its slot has done as well or better in the ratings. Not a good sign for those hoping to see season three of the drama series. Farmer Wants A Wife was up, gaining three hundred thousand viewers. Animal Control lost two hundred thousand viewers.

ABC announced Grey's Anatomy would be back for a twentieth season next season. No word yet on sister show, Station 19, but it should be renewed as well. Grey's Anatomy was down last week, losing one hundred thousand viewers. Station 19 shed four hundred thousand viewers. The Rookie returned after a couple of weeks off, down two hundred thousand viewers. The Rookie: Feds lost half a million viewers. Both shows, however, should be renewed. Will Trent picked up seven hundred thousand viewers. It has made a strong showing following the Rookie shows, and after a bit of a rocky start, could see a second season. The Company You Keep picked up one hundred thousand viewers.

CBS saw NCAA basketball dominate its ratings chart again last week. NCIS was down six hundred thousand viewers. NCIS: Hawai'i lost one hundred thousand viewers. NCIS: Los Angeles returned after a couple of weeks off. It was down half a million viewers. East New York was up half a million viewers. True Lies was even. Still no word on if East New York, True Lies, SWAT, and Blue Bloods will be renewed. Assuming deals can be worked out, SWAT and Blue Bloods should see another season. East New York and True Lies are on more shaky ground. Both are freshman shows that never really caught fire. East New York may have more of an edge since it's been running all season, but renewals for both shows may depend more on what new dramas the network has in the pipe for next season.

NBC has remained tight-lipped regarding renewals for its veteran shows. Fans of the Chicago shows and the various Law & Orders, should have nothing to worry about. The Peacock network loves its franchise nights. Likewise, The Voice and That's My Jam will probably be back next season. The fans sitting on tenterhooks are those who enjoy the network's comedies. A repeat of Night Court still beat first-run episodes of the other half-hour comedies last week, which does not bode well. Chances are Young Rock or Grand Crew are on the chopping block. It wouldn't be much of a surprise if both shows are done after this season. American Auto and Lopez vs Lopez are doing a bit better, but not by much.

The CW had a quiet week. Superman & Lois had steady viewer numbers off its premiere, though it lost a bit in the ratings. Gotham Knights lost two hundred thousand viewers off its premiere. Not a big drop, but it can't lose any more. All American took the top spot again last week. It lost a bit on ratings, but its viewer numbers were even. Walker returned after a couple of weeks off, up one hundred thousand viewers.

It's well known, but unless networks start ordering 30-episode seasons for shows, there's not much they can do about it. November, February, and May are sweeps months. That's when audience numbers are gauged in order to set advertising prices. Networks will always make sure they run new episodes of their popular shows in those months. (The sweeps month for summer shows is July) Networks have to stretch those 20-22 episode seasons the best they can to make sure they have new episodes to air in those months. And US productions aren't like the UK. US shows are in production from August to about April, so if something happens to mess up filming schedules, that throws another wrench in the works.

why are they premiering gotham knights now?  isn't the chance of any super hero shows still being around this fall pretty much zero?

They paid for the episodes, they are going to air the episodes. The CW has all kinds of holes in their schedule (look at the number of repeats every week), so anything new is going to be better than more reruns of something else.

As for the show getting renewed, its chances are slim. It's outside the demographic NexStar has said they want to court, and most of the other superhero shows on the network have already been axed. With that said, NexStar has said they will be renewing a certain number of currently airing programs (I think the number was 8, but I could be wrong). It's also a chance for Warner Bros. to gauge interest. If NextStar does cancel it, they might keep it going on their streamer. Maybe.

quantum leap down in viewers and ratings.  like you said probably going to be that way it's entire run.  i really am going to stop looking at these.  it's been renewed so what does it matter.  i'm really excited for the finale next week.

Yep, ratings watching can get nerve-wracking for those shows that can't make up their mind what they want to do. :) You're good through next season (and I assume it's a full season not a shorty like La Brea).

I can't see any merit in keeping Rookie: Feds. Don't think the comedic lead adds anything to the show. Bit of an insult to female cops.

I tried The Rookie when it first started but soon gave it up. Never watched the spin-off. As for keeping Rookie: Feds, it's never been a big ratings winner, but it trucks along and it does have that franchise tag which networks seem infatuated with at the moment.

Alaska Daily is likely done, as is The Company You Keep. Will Trent has been a bit of a surprise and might be renewed. I haven't heard much about what ABC has in the pipe for new dramas next season other than The Good Lawyer, which, you guessed it is another spin-off. So chances are Rookie Feds will be renewed.

Which show? If it's anything on CBS on Thursday and Friday in March it's a regular occurrence. If you mean Fantasy Island, I'm not sure what the network is doing. Usually, there is some of that one week on two weeks off game in order to eke out enough new episodes to make it to May sweeps. The last two episodes of FI are scheduled for April, so I have no idea why they won't just run them and be done unless they are trying to build up repeats of something else to plug holes.
