Randolph Mantooth

Randolph Mantooth, renowned for his iconic role as paramedic John Gage on the show Emergency!, passed away on July 9 at the age of 80. Born on September 19, 1945, in Sacramento, California, Mantooth was the eldest of four siblings. His father had Cherokee and Seminole heritage, while his mother was of German and English descent. The family relocated frequently due to his father's work in construction engineering. Mantooth's passion for acting emerged during student productions at San Marcos High School. He furthered his studies at Santa Barbara City College. He earned a scholarship to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, where he won the prestigious Charles Jehlinger Award, a significant acting honor from the Academy. Mantooth's acting journey took a significant turn when he was discovered by a Universal Studios talent agent during a production of Philadelphia, Here I Come! and subsequently signed with the studio. After moving back to Los Angeles, he honed his skills through guest appearances on shows such as Ironside, The Virginian, Marcus Welby, M.D., and The Bold Ones. In 1972, his career reached new heights when he secured the defining role of John Gage in Emergency! Emergency! broke new ground and quickly became a hit, running for six successful seasons and elevating Mantooth to television stardom. Throughout its tenure, he directed two episodes and helmed the TV movie The Greatest Rescues of Emergency!. Alongside co-star Kevin Tighe, who portrayed Roy DeSoto, Mantooth performed many of his own stunts. He also reprised his role as John Gage in crossover shows like Adam-12, provided the voice for the animated John Gage in the Saturday morning series Emergency+4, and appeared in the show's comic books and promotional merchandise.
