Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Louis Gossett Jr. earned his first acting credit while in high school, and made his professional debut at age seventeen in Take a Giant Step, which was selected as one of the 10 best Broadways shows of 1953. He first appeared in an uncredited role in the 1960 film The New Girl, and debuted in the role of George Murchison in the1961 film A Raisin in the Sun.
Louis Gossett Jr. died at age 87 of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
