Just started watching this on Britbox and I love it, although there are a lot of very unlikable cop characters that John has to deal with.

It makes sense: James continues to be in danger bc he DOES know something. James called John's cell phone and left the voice mail with a misdirection for anyone who could listen in that he just left bc he was unhappy with his life. This would (hopefully) keep John and James's wife and son out of risk, BUT he knew John would see through the ruse and continue to pursue the real issue, which we should find out more about in S2!
