Advance Notice of Final Seasons

SilverSurfer wrote 9 years ago: 1

During a discussion on a suggestion for a new show status type it was noted by some that advance notice of final seasons was rare. I disagreed with that opinion (the rarity, not the decision on another status type, that was an Admin call I accept). So to help put to bed the idea that few shows/fans get advance notice of their final season, here is a current listing, of 18, I snagged from TVbytheNumbers.

Bates Motel (A&E), premieres early 2017
Beauty and the Beast (The CW), series finale Sept. 15, 2016
Black Sails (Starz), premieres TBD 2017
Bloodline (Netflix), premieres TBD 2017
Bones (FOX), premieres early 2017
Comedy Bang! Bang! (IFC), premieres Oct. 28, 2016
Episodes (Showtime), premieres TBD 2017
Girls (HBO), premieres early 2017
Grimm (NBC), premieres Jan. 6, 2017
Leftovers, The (HBO), premieres TBD 2017
Orphan Black (BBC America), premieres TBD 2017
Pretty Little Liars (Freeform), premieres April 2017
Rectify (Sundance), premieres Oct. 26, 2016
Rizzoli & Isles (TNT), series finale Sept. 5, 2016
Switched at Birth (Freeform), premieres Jan. 24, 2017
Teen Wolf (MTV), premieres November 2016
Turn (AMC), premieres TBD 2017
Vampire Diaries, The (The CW), premieres Oct. 21, 2016

These are all known before their final seasons even start.

Feel free to reply with any that may have been missed, new announcements as well as any shows that are told well in advance (ie well before the final episode is filmed) that the current season airing is the final one.

Not quite. I didn't intend this to cover any shows renewed or that get canceled after their season has ended. I wanted to demonstrate that, unlike days gone by when it was indeed rare, many shows now get advance notice that their upcoming season will be their last.

Ah right, must have misread it when I looked at it then

But it is rare. You have 18 shows listed. There were a total of 409 scripted shows in the 2015 season for broadcast, cable and streaming services. For the vast majority of programs, you will not get any advance notice that the current season is the last season.

This doesn't include "reality" programming at all.

Apples and oranges. There could 4 million shows on air ... the question will be how many get canceled ... and more importantly how many that had 2 or more seasons since it's almost impossible to give advance notice when a rookie show doesn't catch on and never sees a second season. As of this moment for the 2016-17 season the No Advance Notice (NAN) cancels is 0 and the Advance Notice (AN) cancels is 18. Given these numbers it's "rare" a show doesn't get advance notice! Perhaps your arguement will break the shut-out before the end of the season :-)

It's true. That list only covers a handful of the many shows who have advanced notice of a last season.

I'm a little confused with some of your examples and statements. You continue to say "Advance notice of a show ending or it's last season" however a lot of the shows you have listed are shows that have yet to premiere? Why do you have shows that are yet to premiere "premieres TBD 2017" because those shows are not ending/being cancelled so they should not be on your lists or counted in your examples?

JAGUARDOG wrote 9 years ago: 1

Additionally, I did not see or read the original comment(s) on the subject of last season so I have no idea what the original conversation was about however if it was suggesting that a new category be added to the Show info page on when a show is airing it's last/final season (when known) I am all for it! I have never figured out why that is not already a field that we could add to when we find that information out because it is very important and very informative?

All the shows listed have been announced as coming to an end. Some note that the next season is the end but have yet to premiere (ie Grimm) while some have a real long advance notice (ie Archer 3 more seasons then done). So far, only 3 shows have been axed after the season finale.

It sounds like you are saying those shows have yet to premier their newest season which will also be their last season? If that is the case is every show marked as yet to premier going to end the same year it's next season finally premiere's? If you know the final season year you should show it so that people know what it is like this show - Comedy Bang! Bang! (IFC), premieres Oct. 28, 2016 (Can I assume that it also ends with this season and if so when in 2016 or 2017?

This list did originate out of that suggestion. The SysGod(s) turned it down which I fully accept but during the discussion there was an opinion that having advance notice a show was ending was rare ... an opinion I did disagree with so I thought I'd try to keep an ongoing count of shows ending in the 2016-2017 season and whether we knew in advance or it was announced after the fact. I know as the season goes on, shows will be canceled but at this point, it's rare a show doesn't get advance notice :-) It's hard to get real advance notice when rookie shows just don't catch on and get canceled so if they get excluded I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up almost 50/50

Yes, I believe all the shows listed as ending in 2016-2017 will air and end sometime between Sep 2016 - Aug 2017. It's possible some will end up straddling 2 seasons (ie start Jul 2017, end Oct 2017) or eventually get scheduled outside this season. If/when I get more info on that I'll post it here but my original goal was to keep track of canceled/ending shows not necessarily exact start dates, number of episodes, etc so that we can eventually see a Advance notice vs No Advance notice count come next Sep.

Well I agree with you that there are a lot of shows we find out about that are ending and I can say from 15 years of TV site(s) input there are a lot more than your list indicates as I find that information in many different places. I however do NOT agree with their decision NOT to have that information added to shows because it is very important and very informative/interesting.

The excuse of not many shows provide their final season even if that was a true statement what does that have to do with anything? That should not matter if there are a few or a lot that excuse is a very stupid reason not to allow this feature!

I don't believe using September to August is a good measuring stick as there are a lot of shows mostly Reality shows that premiere and end between June and September - "America's Got Talent", "Big Brother", etc. It should be year to year in my opinion?

I never said I agreed with it, just that I accepted it. ;-) I agree with you the info would be useful/informative which is why I made the suggestion but hey, t'ain't my site, t'ain't my rules so I tooks me shot and accepted the call. But like I said, I could not accept a demonstably false premise that advance notice was rare.
