Episode Gallery Photo a Spoiler

I follow Designated Survivor and anxiously awaited the return last week from long winter break. The photo shows ___ in a hospital bed. This photo is a little bit of a spoiler. Not sure if photo upload guide mentions to be careful of this happening but it should. Just my two cents!

What exactly did you think would happen when you're watching pictures from a episode you haven't watched yet ?

LadyShelley wrote 9 years ago: 1

That was a bit blunt, mate. :) Maybe she has seen it and is merely pointing out it could be a spoiler (though since I don't follow the show I'm not sure how big a spoiler).

With that said, I'm not sure what can really be done about spoilers in general (and I am a bit of a spoiler-phobe) as everything listed here is assumed past tense. How long is enough for a spoiler? I'm currently binge watching Criminal Minds. Never seen it before, but I also realise listings from 3,4,5 years ago are going to have spoilers.

Did you really thought that this character would die mid-season?))))

Many other shows have some big episode moments as a main image and it was never considered a problem. I think it would be a spoiler only if such image is uploaded prior to episode broadcast, in any other case it's just a matter of personal preferences...

Is the image in question the episode's main image or is it "just another" gallery item?

In the first case I would say large spoilers are problematic. Otherwise, spoilers like these on the detail pages are quite inevitable - the spoiler you describe would also show on the episode's guest cast/cast appearance page for example.

David, it appeared with the specific episode page.

tnt wrote 9 years ago: 1

Ok, I've uploaded alternative image to the episode gallery. So if majority decides, that it's a problem (which I think is not), the image can easily be replaced :)

I agree, once an episode has aired you can't really expect not to be spoiled if you read about the episode. I mean where does it end, how long after an episode has aired are we supposed to "hide" spoilers? seems pretty simple to me, if you haven't watch an episode and don't wanna run the risk of being spoiled then don't read about the episode online.

Best is to just use the schedule, calendar, watchlist and stay clear of episode pages. That way you'll only have the airdate/airtime.
Anything in an episode page is potentially a spoiler as it's all episode details.

There's just one "but": if somebody uses Plex with TVMaze agent (for example), they'll see main image prior to watching episode. That's the only reason I can think of in favor of avoiding some potential spoilers in images.

Yep, agreed. As I said, it's impossible to avoid spoilers on all parts of the site. But an episode's main image is prominently used on TVmaze itself and elsewhere, so let's try to minimize spoilers there.

Maybe it's reasonable to put together some guidelines considering episode images based on our recent discussions? The policy is pretty vague and somewhat ambiguouson this matter.

Yep, I can add something about spoilers. Was there anything else?

Am I the only one finding it ironic that people complain about finding detailed information about tv episodes on a site that specializes in detailed information about tv episodes...

As was pointed out above, using the api for things like PLEX you don't get a choice on what you see when you select the episode to watch. It's not that much to ask that things like episode images (the main one used) and the episode summary at least try to minimize big spoiler potential.

What you've wrote in another thread: "The image/composition should be exactly as it appears in the broadcast, though ignoring differences like coloring / network logo's / subtitles / etc."

suemac wrote 9 years ago: 1

Thanks for all the input.

"Everything" here is certainly NOT past tense...ie: "Next Episode" info on main show page (which I avoid...like driving along and telling myself NOT to look at a lump on the ground on the side of the highway)

Are the summaries/episode details supposed to tell what happened after-the-fact OR are they 'supposed' to be teasers like the official network/show pages?

TNT, thanks for uploading the alternate pic..which is the same on as on the ABC site. Wonder where the first one came from ???..it's Not on ABC.com (although didn't dig in there) Curious as to source of first pic.

I use another "3rd party" app to get to my shows eps. That must have been how I got to the hospital bed pic. I know I have to be careful as a "delayed viewer".I don't have TV/Cable at all. Still haven't seen the episode and now it appears ABC is sticking to their "8 days after" rule (they hadn't before for this show) so it will be a few more days.

Of course I knew this character wasn't going to die....unless ABC had tricked us and this is is really "Walking Dead Take Over DC" (wait..that's a documentary, no?)

Both images I grabbed myself from the actual episode. ABC uses promo photos as episode thumbs.
