Autofill for main cast

tnt wrote 8 years ago: 1

Currently when adding a guest cast, autofill will automatically enter the character for an actor (if actor is playing a single character). However, that doesn't work for the main cast. I.e. when actor is playing some character as guest star in the first season, and than promoted to the main cast in the second season (as the same character), when you add this actor to the main cast the character is not autofilled, so you have to enter it manually.

Or maybe it's it a bug or done intentionally?

This is done intentionally and is not a bug :)

And what's the reason?

I wish there was a way to differentiate episode count in these instances. It seems more than a bit odd to see a "guest" character with 150 appearances, because s/he was promoted to main cast somewhere in the program's run.

There is not much use for an auto-refill for main cast as it is simply an option to mark. Maybe a guestcast is promoted to main during the season, but is it really necessary for an auto-refill at this point?

Mark where? What option?

Looks like we are talking about different things.

We don't really, but I guess I wasn't 100% clear about it.

Intentionally or not, I guess David just didn't implement it (so we can't consider it a bug). But who cares about it? I rather take a few extra seconds to determine his main cast name (to be sure!) rather than simply following it blindly by using that auto-refill option, which causes mistakes to be made more likely. So after filling it once, you'll only be able to mark his appearance, so what's the use to implement such an option if it basically saves you an extra second or two with little difference, while David is basically spending much more time on it to implement it as I guess there might be some extra coding to it to make it connected.

So, it's ok to have wrong names for the guest stars, but not ok when it came to the main cast? :) Autofill doesn't stop you from checking the name.

It's few extra seconds when you're doing it every now and then. But in occasions when there's a bunch of the main cast members are entered (by mistake) as guest stars, and you have to re-enter existing information over and over again – it's a lot of time and kind of annoying. I'm honestly don't see any downsides of this feature.

When you add Main Cast to episodes, you just check their name on a list. There's no typing or filling in of names. That's presumably what Thomas was talking about.

If you type the character name, you only do it once: to add them to the main cast list so they appear on the "check list" for each episode. So you'd only need the fill-in once.

I don't think anyone has or would blindly accept the name of it was auto-filled from a guest appearance. Since the coding doesn't do it currently, how would we know one way or another? I'd agree that it it probably doesn't save a lot of time if you're updating a show for a season and just making one or two additions. If you're creating a new show and working through a season-by-season list of cast starting with season 1 (particularly for soap operas and animations), then it would save more time. An extra second or two adds up. :) And I'd think the contributors most likely to do that wouldn't be the ones to accept fill-in info blindly.

Whether David thinks it's worth the coding effort, that'd be up to him.

I would like to see a feature added where you only need to type a few characters of a name and it gives you suggestions that match the current show. Currently it gives suggestions, but often they're not from the current show and therefore they're not useful.

Kinda related to this, if a person has guest starred in an episode, the autofill will give the the character name in the second box after you enter the persons real name in the first box. This is great, but it doesn't work if they have appeared multiple times in a series as a different person.

An example i'll give is the uk series, Bargain Hunt. There are many circumstances where someone is the 'Presenter' on one episode, then they are an 'Expert' at other times. Because there are 2 options as to which role they play at various times, the autofill remains black until I start typing 'Expert' etc,

Is there a way we can have a drop down of options if a person has appeared on the same show in different roles?

So you want it to give you a drop down with all of the characters played by that person?

I could also see that being useful for shows with voice acting as a lot use the same actor
