Request to use TV airdate instead of web channel date

dpratt wrote 7 years ago: 1

Disney Channel, Disney Junior, and Disney XD American cable channels air their shows on the US-only DisneyNOW web channel on the morning of the same day the show airs on TV. This means that in most cases shows air first on the web channel before airing on TV. However most shows that are listed here show the TV air times dating back years. I want to request permission from those in charge of TVMaze to continue with that way of doing things, even though I realize it varies from the data policies. This is because the TV airdates and times are what's usually publicized in press releases. Not the web channel.

The only downside I see to this is when shows air weeks in advance on the web channel, before they air on TV. Not only are the dates different. Sometimes they have a different name when this happens. This is rare but it happens usually with series premieres as a way to promote the series before it airs on TV.

Sorry to ask this. It's just that it's kind of a mess the way it is right now and I want to come to a consensus on how this should be delt with.

I have given this more thought. What I want is to treat it like DisneyNOW airs their episodes simultaneous to the television airings on Disney Channel, Disney XD, and Disney Jr on instances when they air on the same date, even though it airs on DisneyNOW at an earlier time, using the press release times for television broadcast. And I want to use the DisneyNOW airdates in the rare instances when the show airs on DisneyNOW on an earlier date than the television airing. In this case I would leave the airtime blank unless the DisneyNOW airtime was in a press release.

I'm requesting admins permission to stray from the data policies in this way. It makes more sense to me since the TV broadcast times are usually what's published in press releases, not the web channel broadcast times. This is how it is already indexed on TVmaze for most shows and episodes dating back years, so they would not need to be changed. And this would allow it to show up in the schedule.

Without this exception I don't think we can publish airtimes in most cases because DisneyNOW airtimes are usually not published in press releases. And if we do find a press release it means changing the date to the previous day's date due to the before 5am rule. We would also need to blank out airdates for most Disney Channel, Disney XD, and Disney Jr episodes since those airtimes are for the TV broadcast, not the web channel which premieres earlier in the day. We would also need to know exactly which shows to change, since not all of them follow the same pattern of airing earlier in the day on DisneyNOW.

I agree with your approach, let us hear what others will have to say :)

If an episode airs just a few hours in advance on their web, I think it is ok to use their network like any press release relates to. However if an episode has aired like a week in advance on their web, I'm not so keen on using their network dates.

+1 to Thomas. Few hours doesn't matter IMO, definitely doesn't worth the efforts to circumvent the system flaws.

Thanks guys! It's pretty rare for episodes to air on the web more than a day in advance. When it does happen though, I will use the web dates.

Just to clarify, are you wanting to do this only for shows where it's currently mixed / already has lots of data for one provider when it should be another?

Or are you wanting to also do this from the start for new shows where there is no existing data?

I'm talking about using both the Network and the Web channel, which implies that they aired simutaneously on the web and on the network. When in reality it's actually separated by a few hours (less than 24 hours). With only a minority of episodes having aired on the web more than a day in advance, if any.

Both for existing and new shows that air on DisneyNOW and its associated TV networks.

I always thought it was kind of weird using the web dates when they also air on TV, I was under the impression we use the info for whichever has premiered the most episodes which would be the TV airings not web since Disney Now putting them up hours before TV is pretty recent. The old Watch Disney Channel/Jr/XD apps didn't use to do that to the best of my knowledge.

There's a similar situation with Syfy. The new season of Channel Zero is airing an episode a day but all episodes were added online/app on Friday. Since the previous 3 seasons didn't do that, shouldn't we use the TV dates for season 4 instead of the one Friday date?

Yes they did (for most shows). I would know.

It sounds like you should use the Friday date for Season 4. The one that premieres the most episodes in the season wins for that season only.

I knew they were up the same day, but didn't know it was before TV, and thought it was whichever premiered the most episodes in general, not just per season.

Considering that the shows tend to migrate from channel to channel, it would be logical to take only the current season into account.

Does DisneyNOW actually announce a release time for these episodes, or just a date? As I said before, we should only use airtimes for local webchannels when they are formally announced, not if we inferred them ourselves. (For technical reasons the episode might not be made available to all users simultaneously, so that would be unreliable).

Yep :)
