Black Panther Best Oscar Nomination -- Don't you Believe It

OK, I'm just going to say it, the Best Picture nomination for Black Panther is a sham.

Before you start calling me names, hear me out.

The movie received no nominations for the cast, direction, or writing. In other words no other major nominations. (It did receive several technical noms which you would expect for a superhero film)

So why DID it get the Best Picture nom? My money is on two things: political correctness and ratings.

On the PC side, this is the MPAA trying to look good. "Hey, look at us being so forward thinking."

But that's nothing compared to the other (and I suspect REAL) reason: Ratings.

The Oscars for the past few years have been dominated by films the general public never heard of and never saw. The hosts even made jokes about it! There was no interest in watching an awards show where the vast majority of the TV audience had no idea who the contenders were and as a result Oscar ratings the last few years have tanked. (Last year's awards ceremony was the lowest rated since Nielsen started keeping track) To try and counter this, a "popular" film was included in the best picture noms (which BTW, the Best Picture is awarded last, so reach your own conclusions) to try and gain back some of the viewers they've lost over the last few years.

Don't get me wrong, it was a good movie. I liked it! But it is not Best Picture material. I will tell you right now, it will not win.

EDIT: Yes, I know. I can't edit the thread title it seems. :)

PC*ratings=$$$$. Rare movie was paid off in the first weekend only. But I don't remember "Worldwide gross" being one of the nominations :D

The movie itself is not bad, but it's far from your usual Oscar flicks. It's not great, not in any way, and probably one of the most boring in all MCU.

It'd be a real shame if it win, they could close the award for good after this :) But I doubt that it have much chance competing with Bohemian Rhapsody or Roma. While the latter have more chances as the "Best Foreign Language Film", the Rhapsody also was paid off in the first weekend, and made almost 10x profit worldwide :)

I already gave up long ago with any award shows. Apparently money and graphics are more important than an actual story itself with some proper acting.

Well,

better Black panther as an Oscar winner than the usual boring pretentious drama stuff :)

How are the nominations determined? Not who wins, but the nominations themselves? It looks like just a relative handful of Academy members nominate them.

"Best Picture" is one of those things that is so subjective that the whole award system is somewhat meaningless. Maybe back in the 30s, and 50s, and 70s, when there were a relative handful of movies. But these days with the Internet and mass communication and Direct-to-Video and creative teams producing "major" movies in basements... taking the opinions of potentially over a million people and determining which five movies are "best" is meaningless.

Given all that, "ratings" (i.e., a lot of people liked the movie, even if it isn't "Best") is as good a reason as any to proclaim it the "Best". To some degree it takes the choosing and awarding out of the hands of Hollywood insiders and turns it over to moviegoers. There are any number of reasons why someone might consider that good or bad.

I have a vague recollection about seeing something on TV about this and basically it's a lobbying process of the academy members.

Sometimes a movie can be greater than it's parts. No "great" acting, writing, directing, etc but everything just clicks and it's a great movie. I enjoyed BP and can say it kinda, for me, falls into that category. Now whether that rises to a best picture node is another question.

For me it's moot ... I haven't really paid attention to any award show in years & years ... the closest I come is playing guess the winner with she who must be obeyed and, usually, picking better than her at over .500 not because I've watched most of the movies but based on outside factors than I have observed in the weeks leading up to the event.

And the Oscars aren't even really about movies ... movies by any realistic definition on Netflix or other streamer, TV or direct to video are excluded. Why? Does it really matter where it was shown? A movie is a movie is a movie.

And as said above, if they expect Johnny Lunchpail and Jane Sixpack to tune in and watch then they need more than snooty, pretentious crap to lure them in and capture those eyeballs. ymmv.

Roma is from NetFlix so there's that settled.

As for BP, like I said, I liked the movie. It was fun and entertaining. But for me its not even the best of the MCU fare, much less the best picture of 2018. It's there solely to win back ratings for the awards show after the embarrassment that was last year. Of course, if they can't find a presenter, all of this will be moot anyway.

Also, Manchester By The Sea, from last year's awards, was the first digital distribution film (Amazon Prime) to get an Oscar Best Pic nom.

As for Black Panther, the film interested a lot of people who aren't superhero movie (or even action/blockbuster/"popcorn movie") fans, including me. That, I think, is why it has gotten even more popularity and recognition than the other superhero films.

Lastly/IMO: I'm glad The Academy isn't just handing out Oscars to films that make the most money, or have the loudest explosions, whatever. That may change a little if they approve this "Popular" award category (as requested by Disney and, oh surprise!, to be awarded to Disney films). The problem being that, most likely, no film will ever be nominated for both "Popular" and "Best." (And it should be obvious why The Academy didn't create this "separate but [not] equal" category this year just to put Black Panther in it.) :-)

Lesson folks talk is talk. I hope none of you really thought a Scifi action comic flick was going to get best picture.
