British TV/General Discussion

Heard about  Tim  West ,  sheerwater ..   He had  one of those faces that once you seem him once you'd  never forget him.  Also found out in the same article that  Sam West  ( Siegfried  Farnon )  from   All  Creatures ...  is his son . S5 airs here in  January ,  can't  wait.  Was thinking back to Prunella Scales in  Fawlty Towers as  Basil's wife , she had such a strong and commanding presence  that he was scared to death of her ... this lead to many funny, funny scenes .  RIP Tim , you had a long life.

Seems like I'll be seriously looking at getting PBS streaming in January. I just read that our next season of Vienna Blood is going to air on Jan5th! If I understood right, there were only 2 cases (4 episodes) in this 4th season, but some is better than none!  LOL

Hello Sheerwater! Sorry to hear about Timothy West, I had read that he had been taking care of Prunella in recent years and it never quite hit me that he himself was up there in years. He had a long and prosperous life, RIP Mr. West.

Solar, I have yet to finish the finale of "Marlow Murder Club", will get to that this week. Like you, it hasn't kept my attention - I find myself getting bored with it while watching. I don't dislike it, it is just one that I'll keep aside for when I have nothing else to watch.

"The Diplomat" has been great this season, not sure if you have watched yet, so I will say no more. Given the ending of this season I know we will have another, 🙌 but where they are going with all this is up for grabs - it is going to be very interesting.

I follow Rufus Sewell's wife Vivi on Instagram. They got married just recently. She is much younger than him and a natural beauty. She looked stunning at their wedding -  her hair naturally flowing, makeup done with an old makeup pallet from college, and a dress she bought off the rack at a local mall. Not many woman could pull that off and look so beautiful, but she has youth on her side and let's be honest, that certainly helps.

She has been through a lot of late though, right before her wedding her father passed from an illness and then right after the wedding her soul animal - her beloved dog died. She was in immense grief and I felt every inch of her pain, which she expressed at its' depths. I felt/feel for her as I understand what she is feeling.

I have started watching the last season of "Vera", which I left aside to watch for when I needed something to watch to absorb and distract me. Believe me, I need it now....... and am thankful that I had the resolve not to jump in when it was first aired on Britbox.

Appara, I wanted to mention with Prime -  because it took me awhile to catch on - there is an "On now" category of shows that are on offer and may include channels that you are not subscribed to. Think of it like turning on the TV to see what is playing and catching a show you like. You can find out what is coming next by clicking on each offered "station". I get a lot of shows from Britbox, which I am subscribed to, but last week out of the blue was a Mhz Montalbano episode and I caught it right at the beginning. Loved it.

They have a "Sleuths" channel, if you watch an episode from that, it will show in your continue watching lineup so you can see what is playing whenever you go in to Prime streaming. I find that very useful.

Brit ..  Finished the finale of  Marlow  ,  I view this series as a  ' look over the laptop '   show .  It's  murder plot  is a reminder of that old Hitchcock murder classic  '  Strangers on a Train '   that goes back to the early 1950's .  (  Two strangers meet on a train and discuss murdering each others wife .. perfect crime because there is no connection between the victim and murderer )  Only in Marlow it was a three way plot instead of two.  Might settle in better with a S2 , if there is a  S2 .. much the same as I did with  Ridley .

appara  ..  On  PBS    Vienna Blood  S4 , Jan. 5 / 25.    All  Creatures  S5 , Jan. 12 / 25.   Miss  Scarlet  S5   Jan. 12 / 25.    Wolf Hall   Mar. 23 / 25. (  If your interested  ,  I'm  not . )    Good  luck with your streaming .

Solar, good point about "Ridley" and "Marlow" - I really disliked the first season of Ridley, so much so I wasn't going to watch the second. I gave in and decided to give it one more try when aired this Mystery season and much to my surprise my opinion turned itself around. It gelled more with me and I found Ridley much more likeable than in the first series. I may wind-up feeling the same way about Marlow in S2, so I'll keep an opened mind.

solar wrote 9 months ago: 1

Yeah  Brit  ..   I'm keeping an open mind as well on  Marlow Murder Club ...   still got  Ridley in  PVR  and started watching S2  all over again .  Was hoping they would have done  flash backs to when Ridley lost his wife / daughter to get the full story .   He has been in therapy 3 years now  over it . It looks like his consultancy with police and  singing , along with his attachment  to the pub are  diversions from an otherwise lonely and  empty  life .  When I re watch an  Ep. I pay particular attention to the therapy sessions  and what the Dr. has to say to him to find out how he is progressing .

Hi,

My dad was on an episode of busman's holiday in the late 80s but i don't know what series it was. His team worked for British telecom and i was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction of how to find the full series.

Thanks

solar wrote 9 months ago: 1

Sorry  Carrzy31  ..  wish I could help you ,  thought  Busman's Holiday was a game show.

Yes it was a game show

Carrzy32, I did some hunting around and outside of a few episodes I found on YT, the series does not seem to be available in any format for rewatch to the general public.

Deedee, wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving tomorrow. Haven't heard from you in a while and hope that all is okay by you. 👋

Happy Thanksgiving   dee  and  Brit .   Send me up some  turkey  (  don't forget the stuffin '  )

Thanks, Solar! The stuffing (and sides) are the best part!

Hello all! Thanks, solar and Brit, Thanksgiving was good, especially since I didn't cook. In-laws make the best rutabaga and turnip mash.

Not enamored of any of the recent shows, so I didn't want to be a Nellie Negative. I'm glad Vienna Blood is coming back, I hope there are no updates in time or place.

Hope everyone is good.

Hey, Deedee

Remember Nicolas Campbell - well, he was in a TV series "Haven" a little over ten years ago. He plays the police chief in the first two seasons. The story, based in the State of Maine, is a supernatural mystery series. Not my usual thing, but I decided to give it a go. Watched the first episode on Prime and I am intrigued enough to want to continue. I don't know how long I will go on as it has five seasons, I am committed though to watching at least the first season.

Also rewatching "Midnight Diner" on Netflix. Boy, is that fuel for the soul in this soulless time. I always think of you when I am watching and say to myself, yep, that would be Dee's and my hangout - we would fit right in. A nice thought even if it is only wishful thinking.

Sorry to ask, but is the beautiful Nicholas in 'Haven' or the bedraggled Nicholas?

I don't have Netflix anymore, but is that the group of Japanese people in that eatery we watched a long time ago? Oh, what a show, and oh, what a memory I can't remember the name. Or is this it?

BritMystery wrote 9 months ago: 1

Deedee, more of a bedraggled Nicolas - not totally there though. The second/third episodes give him more screen time than the first, and you can still see some of the "Da Vinci" Nicolas lurking there. I have to tell you, the show is a little kooky, not really something you would like. It would get on your nerves.

Yes it is! " Midnight Diner" and "Midnight Diner, Tokyo", which was your favorite of the two series. It is about the Japanese diner that opens late at night and closes at 7:00 in morning. What a great cast of characters... and the food! Simple and delicious.

It is just as powerful watching it again as it was the first time. Every story hits the heart (as well as the soul). Has to go down as one of my favorite series of all time.

Yeah dee  ....   waiting for Vienna Blood  and  All  Creatures   ta come  around  next  month  PBS .    Start on the  5th and 12th.

Brit  ...   second time  I've looked on  Netflix  for  Midnight  Diner ,  can't find it .

BritMystery wrote 9 months ago: 1

Looked it up, Solar - "Midnight Diner, Tokyo" is available on Netflix in Canada. This is the sequel to "Midnight Diner", it was produced by Netflix (because the original "MD" was so successful for them) about five years after "MD" and this seems to be the reason why you have access to it in Canada.

'Midnight Diner, Tokyo" is still a lovely production - the holiday party episodes are the absolute best - it feels like you are there celebrating with old friends. Really. Great to watch during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Deedee loved the sequel as she watched it first before she watched the original. I, on the other hand - outside of the party episodes - embraced the original more. In this, you get a deeper background on the characters and the stories are touchingly heartfelt, they are simple, human stories and always have a message that resonates.

The stories in "Tokyo" are more "colorful" - with Netflix producing it you can expect that, as they are trying to speak to a wider audience. There is a purity to the original, produced solely by the Japanese, that the Netflix production doesn't emulate.

This all being said, you are going to hate the subtitles. I think you would appreciate the characters and the stories, but the subtitles will turn you off as they are unavoidable.

I know I am the only one, but "Wolf Hall" is next on my watch list. I will probably dive in to "All Creatures" a bit, but only the episodes with lighter stories involving the animals.
