British TV/General Discussion

I would be the one to tune in for a young Maigret. This new series looks to be more of an 'origin' story with these two young actors? Stefanie Martini I vaguely remember from Prime Suspect. Then there's Benjamin Wainwright - who is very easy on the eyes! It says just started filming so I imagine it may hit our PBS screens late next year?

"

Moonflower" (love that name). What a disaster Crete turned out to be. I felt for Susan - literally putting out fire after fire everyday. single. day. That will take the wind out of anyone's sails. Quite frankly, I would not want to be in her shoes no matter how beautiful the environment may be.

So good to see Atticus Pund again. He has become my favorite character in these stories.

I was a little disappointed how obvious it was that the employee Stefan, who had a criminal record for theft, was so quickly singled out as the culprit and banged-up. They should have tried to give us a more convincing situation.

Yes, he would be first in line as a suspect, but it is a leap for a person to go from burglary to murder - and you could see frame-up written all over that. I know there was physical evidence found in his room and he later confessed for some unknown reason, but you could feel that something was not right (even from our side of the screen!). Of course lazy Inspector Chubb just went with it, God-forbid he should actual use a brain cell.

The sister (of the bride) is in the middle of all this. The look Stefan gave her from the police car. (The look she was giving her sister during the reception!) Warm-hearted and loving is not the first description to come to mind.

The interview with Anthony Horowitz after the episode was great. Oh my goodness, he was so excited about the upcoming story. He left me so ready for more.

Yes  Brit ....  Crete was a total disaster from the get-go.  Wonder if she'll go back after the case ( after all she was enticed by the  10,000 £  from Cecily Treherne's parents  to find her )   and she told  Andreas  ' we need the money '.  To sink that 10,000  into that  money pit sounds like a real waste maybe Andres will come back with his tail between his legs and put an end to that foolish dream. Your right about  handy man Stefan , a little too quick to corner  him for the  murder of Frank Parris , where it could have been left as  just  an unsolved murder  , a cold case , as it were ,  but  maybe Horowitz  has a plan to bring back Stefan later in the series and your right about  ' that look '  between Stefan and Cecily's sister from the back seat of the car .....  more of a story with these two , me thinks .  Is Cecily hiding or was she murdered  ..  who is her  counter from the book I wonder , is it Melissa James  ????    With Susan back home and with the guidance of Atticus  this will unravel with time .  Interview  with Horowitz was a nice finishing touch and shows how committed he is to this  blended  story within a story , only hope he is writing more of these.  More questions answered  tonight ..  can't wait.

Yes, thought that wasn't too much of a spoiler, but ick, Ridley does sing. Yes, Rowan was very good in the role of Maigret. The new pup reminds me of the Prime Suspect (not badly done) and Miss Fisher puppettes. Just not the same. I'll wait and see.

Glad I'm leaving Moonflower series for last. Bad idea if they bump off Hendrick, they can take away Piet if they need to cut a character.

deedee713 wrote 11 months ago: 1

Where's the dog? Piet takes the leash off, and the dog is never seen again.

Appara, I would imagine the new Maigret is planned for airing next year. I didn't really think of it, but yea, now that you mention it, they may be trying to do an "Endeavour" here and give us a prequel.

Yes, thought that wasn't too much of a spoiler, but ick, Ridley does sing.

Deedee, It wasn't! Thanks for warning me.😀

P.S. The dog will be back, he's in every episode.

To sink that 10,000  into that money pit sounds like a real waste.

You said it, Solar. An off to the wind thought, but it did occur to me that as Cecily's parents are successful hoteliers, maybe when this story is all said and done they will take over the running of the Crete hotel - or maybe take it off of Andreas hand's - and get Susan out of this mess. How Andreas would feel about that IDK, but Susan would give out a huge sigh of relief.

Watched  Ridley   ' A  Sleeping  Tiger  Part  2  '  ...  this series  is starting to grow on me a little .  Not fast paced  but  slow n' low .   Still in therapy  after 3 years , think it was appara who said they ( wife / daughter ) died in an  arson  house fire .  Can't remember any of this from last year , would like to know the back story on this.  Wonder if that was the reason he left the force and is now a consultant .

BritMystery wrote 11 months ago: 1

Okay, you all may need to sit down for this one... he still can't sing, but I really liked the song and I thought that particular scene was a really good addition to the story. I went back and watched it again because I liked it so much. You can now all pick up your jaws, which I am sure have dropped to the floor. What can I say, credit should be given when it is deserved and that scene got me. It was good.

Solar, the loss of his daughter and wife is why he is now a consultant and not working on the police force. He is carrying a lot of guilt because his wife and daughter died in a fire at their home that was started to scare him off of an investigation when he was still on the force. I don't think he was home at the time. I can't remember the specifics of the story. Appara is the one who remembers this type of thing better than I do.

Yeah Brit ..  song caught my ear as well  ,  '  Rain on the Window '  ,  your right  ..  still can't sing .  lol   Hope he can find some sort of peace with his loss.

What's goin on with  Van der Valk's  Hendrik  ..  doin' a self diagnosis  ..  didn't like what he saw lookin' thru that microscope. Wrote on that vile ..   ' unknown  male ' and sent it in.  Next week might give us an answer on that .   Moonflower  tonight .

According to the article: "The new Maigret series, produced by Playground (Wolf Hall, All Creatures Great and Small), is set in the present" so is unlikely to be a prequel. Sounds like it will be a contemporary reimagining of the original novels. It would also explain why its cheaper to make as they wont have the expense of recreating a bygone era as with the more traditional versions of the books. Plus the lead actor is not exactly well known! Unlike Michael Gambon and Rowan Atkinson.

Hi Sheerwater

Well that is answered! A "contemporary" reimaging of Maigret... Oh boy. That didn't percolate with me when I read the article - I didn't pick up on it. To be honest, I would have been happier if it was a prequel.

Good ta hear from ya  sheerwater  ..  and thanks for the  info. on the new  Maigret  series .

Brit ..   on the latest  Ep. of  Moonflower  Murders ,  her father was right about  Lisa Treherne  , she sure has a sharp tongue   '  £ 10.000  just to read a book '   lol  don't know the significance of  that book  but her parents do. She is so obviously a stand out I wonder if she is a red herring .  Still no info. yet on victim  Frank Parris .  Interesting ,  hard to focus in on who could have killed him when ya know nothing about him .  Now,  Atticus  Pund has  lots of  paths to go down  when it comes to  solving Melissa  James's  murder  1.  hotel manager and  wife  2.  her financial advisor  and  3.  her husband .  4. someone yet unknown . Two  murders to solve and  Atticus will cross over to help  Susan along the way .  She means business , now that she's  got her little red  MG out of storage .  lol

Yes, thanks for the info Sheerwater. I read the blurb but I too didn't catch the 'contemporary' wording.

Did anyone catch the sneak peek of Matlock on regular tv? I quite enjoyed Kathy Bates in this role, and was pleasantly surprised to find this wasn't going to be a reboot of the original, replaced with a female lead. Of course, you have to suspend reality because alot of the storyline is way-out-there, but I think overall I will be entertained, in an Elsbeth kind of way! LOL

Solar, watched "Van der Valk" last night. Good episode! This series has really grown on me. Glad that you mentioned the "unknown male" on the vile because I missed it the first time around - when I was done with the episode I said to myself "I don't remember seeing the scene Solar spoke about", so I went back to find it. It would have completely got passed me. In my own defense, there was a lot going on in that episode. Some great characters and a real mix of them.

That must have been one dysfunctional relationship he had with the ex! Gees, you could cut the animosity with a knife. I do understand though, he is carrying a lot of guilt over the passing of his dog and she being the person who was with her at the end. I totally get it and every time he looks at her that is what he remembers (and that will never go away).

I do like Lena very much, she is such a calming spirit, helps to counter balance him. His team is a strong one, they work very well together. I hope there are no changes moving forward.

Appara, just saw your post (again we were writing at the same time). Didn't know about the new "Matlock" with Kathy Bates. I am going to check it out. Thanks!

Dame Maggie Smith has died at the age of 89. She has such a storied resume, but her role as the Dowager Countess of Grantham will always be the one that I remember with fondness. She was a huge part of what made that franchise so popular all over the world. RIP Ms. Smith.

solar wrote 11 months ago: 1

RIP   Dame  Maggie  ..  your right Brit .   as the Dowager Countess  she made  Downton Abbey   ..  irreplaceable .   Every scene she was in , you focused on her ..  every scene she was not in , you waited for her.   I'll never forget  her line in one  Ep.  '  What is a Weekend  ? '   lol

Moonflower...  Solar, I really like that this season is set well before "Magpie". Getting to see everyone before they became established and infirmed is a treat. Glad Anthony Horowitz decided to (well, I guess he had too if he wanted to continue the series!), but in any event I am enjoying it.

We seem to be seeing more of Atticus this season as well which is also a plus.

Back in the day the Detective Inspector was more with it, he gave a good summary of the circumstances of the actresses' murder including the suspects. (Okay, he did forget to check the husbands alibi! 😉) IMO, he got more closed minded and narrow thinking as he got older. That scene with him eating the cake was great. The doctor and his wife (and their new financial status, whatever that is about) I think is a red herring.

Got to watch that masseuse at the hotel (present day) - he was trying to hard to get rid of Susan.

Still missing so much info. Can't put my finger on anything or anyone yet.

Listening to Anthony Horowitz talk about Crete and how it is his "place" in this world and wanting to make it Susan's - got to say, he isn't doing a great job of that.😊 Her whole experience to date has been anything but "soul" place inducing - she ran from there and the look on her face when she was back in London and started her red convertible said it all. Anthony is dreaming that, it is not what we are seeing on screen. It is going to be a big leap to get there if that is what he has in mind.

solar wrote 11 months ago: 1

Yeah Brit  ...   with  Moonflower  ya really got ta keep your mind on which  era  your in  ..   1954  or  2023 .   With  Atticus  going back and forth  it tends at times to get confusing .  With  2023  ' era '   the Frank Parris murder goes  back  8  years .   Have all 3 in  DVR .  Will  view   Ridley  tonight .  Good point ya make about  Horowitz  talking about Crete .  His ' place ' ...  sure ain't  Susan's  ' place '   That plane couldn't fly her otta there fast enough .  lol    Wonder if she'll go back  when all's said and done  or will she keep her little red  MG otta storage and look for another case to work on .

I hope so, I would love at least one more season. It may be tricky as he will have to place it back in time again to include Atticus P. (if we move on from Alan Conway and his world to another I would be fine with it - two seasons of Alan is enough), but if anyone can do it Anthony Horowitz can.

One of the standout characters this season for me is Madeline, Atticus P.'s assistant and all around right-hand. She is very dynamic and a great addition to the cast.

I plan on viewing "Ridley" tonight as well.
