British TV/General Discussion

Good ta hear  from ya Brit   ..   your  back with  US  now.

Totally understand your grief (and anger) Brit. I started with CBD oil on our oldish girl Kyra. She loves eating bees, wasp, hornets - it's the sweetness? - and it helps keeps the swelling down from getting stung/bit!  LOL  Now I am putting in an order for my (also oldish) guy too. I inherited a cat from one son, and a big Newfie dog from my other son - I think I may have mentioned this before? Anyway, Monty has 2 titanium knees, and with winter coming I know he is really going to feel the cold as I believe he may have a bit of arthritis setting in.

Over the past many months we've been enjoying Foyles's War, next week is the finale of the series, I can't believe it's almost over - again!!

Tonite I have a busy PBS lineup starting with Lorna Doone at 5, followed by Ridley, Moonflower Murders, and Van Der Valk. I saw that Lorna Doone originally aired a few years back, but I don't remember watching it.

Just  finished  Ridley  '  A  Sleeping  Tiger '    Part  1 .   Not a bad  series  IMO .   Like the opening theme ,  low key but  kind of haunting .   I've  called him  the singing detective  last season  but there was no singing in this Ep. ......  just a thought , maybe he waits until he completes a case .  Doesn't like neighbors  by the look of where his house is.  In the scene with his therapist  ( lost his wife and daughter ) 3  years ago , I can't remember how they died .

Solar, I watched last night too. I wasn't going to, because by the end of last season I was done with it. Not a fan of AD and the whole bit with the singing 🙄 (that's a huge eye roll). Well, I decided to give it one more chance as I wanted to save my two favs for later in the week. This season started out better... first no singing, which is a definite improvement - though I agree with you, it will be coming and as you suggested, probably when he closes the case; and second, he was so much less annoying. Still don't like him, but he managed to stay off my nerves.

Something though is missing with this series, it just doesn't pull me in like our other Sunday night detective shows. It has a low vibe, and the needle never moves from this. I like a slow burn detective series, but this one never gets the tension to build up even for a minute. It lives on a low hum. All that being said, I will be continuing on with the season.

P.S. I don't remember what happened to his wife and daughter either.

BTW, for those that watch "Hotel Portofino", I really enjoyed this season .... until the last episode!!

What was that all about! Did they lose their collective minds - what a terrible (terrible) way to end the season. Awful... and from the reviews I read on-line I am far from the only person who feels this way. I don't even know if I am going to continue on if they have a S4.

deedee713 wrote 11 months ago: 1

Ugh. I too don't like AD, but gave it a try, and he wasn't as annoying as first season. No matter, fell asleep on it.

Ack. Fell asleep on Moonflower Murders too! No fault of the show, too many dog walks since hubs can't help. Oh, and I'm old.

Brit, if you have Acorn TV, I highly recommend Bäckström, the Swedish version. Can you believe they made an American version, of course you can, they did the same with Cracker!

I am glad at this point I have PBS Passport, they have all the episodes of all the new shows!

solar wrote 11 months ago: 1

Yeah  Brit  ......  I get what you mean by the ' low  vibe '  thing.  AD  really does not have much of a screen presence.  It certainly is not one of my  favs but I look at it as a fill in while I wait for better things to come along , as long as there's no singing  I can settle in and watch .  lol

Now,  my fav. is   Magpie / Moonlight   series by Horowitz .  like what he's done with the two  blended  eras  but you really have to pay close attention  to follow  the events in each era ..  to see how he meshes  them together .  Using same actors  playing characters  in the two eras  is unique .   I watched  Magpie  series  3  times  and each time I learned something  new .  Still have it in  PVR  and might watch again .  Didn't care for the Crete  scenes  although it is beautiful there  I prefer Susan  Ryeland  in England  zipping around in her little red  sports car .  Instead of looking for a missing chapter she will be looking for a missing  woman ...  so was happy to see her on that jet  heading back to England .

Don't know what's going on in  Hotel Portofino ...  something in the water or  what ...  didn't expect that sort of ending , though was alright with  that little Fascist  upstart Danioni  looking like he was gonna  be forced to take a long  swim but didn't work out that way .  don't know what will happen to  Bella's  husband but can take a guess.

Bingo, that sums up how I feel too.

I haven't goten  to "Moonflower" yet - I think I am saving that for last this week and moving on to "Van Der Valk" next.

I also re-watched "Magpie Murders" and enjoyed it even more the second time around. This is a great series, there is so much going on - a story on top of "the story" - that it certainly lends itself to rewatching several times without getting old. This, at least in my opinion, has got to be one of the best series to come out of Masterpiece in a long while. To be honest, I didn't think they still had it in them. I never thought we would see a series the likes of Poirot and Miss Marple again (leaving, Morse, Frost, Inspector Lynley, Inspector Alleyn aside), but they did it. It is unique, engaging, and the attention to detail is right up there at the top. It is a true winner. Anthony Horowitz is the best writer we have today.

What I found interesting is I really took to Atticus Pund much more with my second view. I felt soo much more drawn to him. As you said you pick up more, and your viewpoint can change, with each rewatch.

Regarding "Hotel Portofino", how the hell do they plan to go on from that ending?? Nowhere good. I can't even imagine how Bella is going to pick up the pieces after that, let alone Constance. I think the series lost a lot of its' joy with that ending and I don't see where it will be able to get it back.

I believe Ridley's wife and child died in a house fire/arson, which led to his nervous breakdown and early retirement. and then on to a singing career in the pub. which I agree, he's not a singer!!

I do hope they will continue with Hotel Portofino, as there were unresolved storylines? Even though I didn't like that this season was so gloomy, it does track with how horrible this period in history was. The finale was Hollywood shock & awe, not what I expect from the Brits, so perhaps this was intended to be a series finale as well?

Your little elf is off to a good start Soler, it's shaping up to be an interesting season. Except for the little bit with Hendrick coughing up blood. I enjoy his character and would hate to see him go!

Deedee, I don't have Acorn, but if I get a chance to see it on Prime with a sample month I will dive in!

Speaking of Prime, if you still have it, I have been getting my Nordic Noir fix watching "Detective Maria Kallio" these days. Not bad, the best we've ever seen, no, but good.

BTW, to all... when I mentioned "My Life is Murder" (it is airing on several channels currently) - don't bother. I watched about five episodes (I started with S2 because at the time that is all that was available to me), after initially thinking it had some potential, it started getting on my nerves and then proceeded to hit my last one. The lead character has a huge chip on her shoulder and it gets really annoying after a while. I would say skip it unless you can deal with her off handed cracks to everyone she comes in contact with.

Appara, I wanted to suggest looking in to the "Vet Omega" vitamins (that is the name) for Monty to help the area around the titanium knees as it is suppose to be very good for joints (just like in humans) and in addition, since Miss B is taking it, I noticed that her fur is coming in brown again in some areas where she use to be all grey and white. It certainly is doing something for her. I then thought to check the price and at $42 an ounce which is quite high for a rabbit dosage - I can only imagine how much it would cost for a dog dose. Then I remembered you live in Canada - the land of affordable medications. So you may have access to it at a much better price.

P.S. I just saw your post - you must have been writing the same time I was!

The finale was Hollywood shock & awe, not what I expect from the Brits, so perhaps this was intended to be a series finale as well?

That thought crossed my mind also.

Thanks for that Brit ...  between his art  collection and as a historian he keeps himself  busy .  Hard to believe he  80.   Not only a collector of art but a collector of  rescue horses , donkeys and dogs  with lots of land for them .  Sounds like a happy , full retirement for him and his wife.  Still do my weekend  Midsomer view ...  up to  Neil Dudgeons  30th   Ep.  now .  When  completely finished I start all over again with   The  Killings at  Badger's  Drift ,  which goes back to 1998 I believe .

Thanks Brit. I amazon'd Vet Omega and it seems to be a .com item, but not a .ca item. I do use Camelina oil on both my pups, it's supposed to be good for fur and joints. and seems to help my terrier mutt's fur feel not quite so much like petting a wire brush!!  LOL

BritMystery wrote 11 months ago: 1

Appara, the Camelina oil seems to do much the same as the Omega oil, so you got the joint/skin/fur covered. Kudos to you, you are certainly on top of it.

Your little elf is off to a good start Soler, it's shaping up to be an interesting season.

Yes, yes! Watched last night. Solar, you may really enjoy this season  - a lot more action going on. Piet is starting out quite testy. I mean really testy. 😀 It is a good episode.

I find John Nettles such an interesting man. Besides his many interests, he cares greatly about his causes, particularly animal rescue and as you say, has made himself a lovely retirement life. He truly is an historian, I purchased his first book on Jersey years ago and learned a lot about the island.

BTW, I forgot to mention, did anyone else read that they are going to do another Maigret redo? Can't remember if PBS is involved in this one. I don't understand why, Maigret is an iconic detective (I know most of the stories by heart), but it has been done countless times, in every way possible. I wish they (tptb) would focus on bringing us new material instead of rehashing the old.

Cranky  little  elf   LOL   ....   very testy with that  Police  Woman , must be something that goes back to last season .What's with  the  M. E.  Hendrick  Davie  coughing blood into handkerchief ...  something going on with  him .  Watched last night as well  ,  not a bad Ep.  flowed nice .

BritMystery wrote 11 months ago: 1

Yea, not good about Hendrick's health, coughing up blood is a definite sign that something is wrong and he is also doing a lot of coughing in general. He needs to do something about that and quickly. But, he knows that. Hopefully, he is getting on top of it and we will find out more next episode.

That police woman is an old flame (I have never seen her in previous episodes) and from what we have seen, that break-up did not go well!

Came across the article I mentioned above regarding Maigret. PBS is involved. IDK, I know these stories forward and backwards, I have watched the best play the role (each in their own way.) I am just not interested in seeing it done again. I will probably pass on this one.

I am savoring the current offerings, and watching each series to the end. A good thing about PBS Passport. Oh, and another is I can fast forward past Dunbar's singing.

Brit, I would never have thought I could accept a Holmes other than Jeremy Brett - Cumberbatch was horrid - but I loved Jonny Lee Miller's Endeavour to pieces. IF, and it's a big IF, the new Maigret - remember Rowan Atkinson wasn't bad, not sure why he didn't make more - isn't to my standards, then I too will pass.

BritMystery wrote 11 months ago: 1

Deedee, Oh Lord, so we do have to withstand his singing this season! Good on you with Passport, glad you are enjoying this new crop of shows. I have "Moonflower" left to watch and I am so looking forward to it.

Oh, oh oh...I meant to tell you this, but it slipped my mind. I thought of you when I found out that "Elementary" is now being offered on Prime. As I said above, not sure you still have Prime, but I know this is a favorite show of yours and if you do still have access, you can now watch on demand.

So agree on Rowan Atkinson, his version was very good. And believe me, I was so totally against him in that role - I figured they were going to make a mess of it, and I think you were the one who told me to give it a try because he actually did a great job. And, he did.

The production was well done. I also don't know why they did not do more, we only got four episodes. It certainly was a hit with the PBS crowd. I think I remember something was said that the production was too costly to continue on, which honestly makes no sense given its' popularity (at that time) in the States.

And now, here we go again - like this new version is not going to be expensive to produce?? Better they would have waited a year (or even two) and brought Rowan back for a few more episodes. I bet you though, PBS is putting a pretty penny in to the production of this new one and that could be making all the difference.

I also thoroughly enjoyed Michael Gambon's version - I have watched it several times. As you know though, my heart will always lie with the (French) Bruno Cremer. When I think of Maigret, I think of Bruno. I loved that man in the role. Loved.

Don't know about this guy  Benjamin  Wainwright  , he looks awful  young.  I picture   Maigret  as being  older  ,  Gambon has me spoilt.  Will  I watch ?  don't know  , depends on my  mood.
