British TV/General Discussion

Deedee, been going through my list of series to watch on Acorn, and last night decided to give "Dalgliesh" another try - you know I gravitate to these stories and although disappointed in "The Murder Room, I was itching to see another one. So, I skipped "Death in Holy Orders" figuring I was not going to like that any better than "MR" (both Martin Shaw stories) and moved on to "Cover her Face", one originally done by Marsden.

Very good... Carvel came alive! He really did the story justice. And, he is so much better without his sidekick Kate. Sooo much. They really were not faithful to how her character was written by James in this version by shortchanging her capabilities and professional importance in his life - which is a real shame.

Brit, I am glad you liked him better in CHF.

I miss the stellar mysteries we used to watch, so am always happy to see a stellar-lite show.

Have you seen the series with Alan Cumming and Miriam Margolyes? Their jaunt in Palm Springs was a treat.

Lastly, I bet you'll tear up at the end of Vera:Farewell Pet.

dee and  Brit .....    GREEN  LIGHT  for  ' All  Creatures ....  '    S5   E3      dee  , that  Alan Cummings  series you mentioned  ..  is that  ,  The Traitors ?

deedee713 wrote a year ago: 1

solar, it seems I happened upon Miriam and Alan: Lost in Scotland from 2022, Season 2, episode 3. There is only episode 4 remaining. On PBS WNET.

Thanks, Solar! Appreciate the heads-up.

I was wondering the same thing about the Cummings/Margolyes show, I was going to look for it, but would not have associated the title Lost in Scotland with Palm Springs 😃, so I would have been looking forever!  I'll check my local PBS stations to see if it is airing or coming to the airwaves soon. Series tend to hit the smaller stations later, or may be on repeat, so you never know.

Deedee, I thoroughly enjoyed my week of Acorn TV. I saw everything I wanted to see and had my fill. It was a good break from my usual TV fare. A free week of Starz is coming up at the end of February, so I am going to check to see if there is anything I am interested in watching.

Solar, what a lovely episode of "All Creatures"! Brought a tear to my eye more than once...one of the best episodes of the series. "Feel good" to the max.

Just finished a rather  raunchy  Western  series  on  Netflix  called  ' GODLESS '   (  just a time filler  actually )   filmed in  2016.  As the credits appeared  at the beginning  I was surprised to see  Michelle Dockery's name roll  past . I started looking for her and found her in a  long drab , dusty  western dress and  floppy hat , playing a  horse ranch owner . So now  I 'm  gonna look for some Downton to watch .  Much preferred  Dockery as  Lady Mary  even with that phony  upper  crust  accent  she put on in later episodes .

You  posted as I was  typing  .   lol      a tear or two  ,,,  yes  Brit ...  this show will bring out the  emotion in  ya .  That's for sure.

I am aware of the series Solar, they made a big thing of Michelle Dockery being part of the cast when it first came out - particularly because it is such a departure from her Downton role. It kind of looked interesting, but in the end, I didn't think I would like it, so I skipped it.

Slim pickings on Netflix of late. Have you already watched "Operation Mincemeat"? If you haven't, it was quite good, I think you would enjoy it.

Brit  ...    All  Creatures   S5  E4   GREEN    light   BUT   with  CAUTION  .....   has a snake in it.   Not that  anything  happens to the snake  but I'm not a fan of these   slithering  creatures  so was pleased when  these scenes were  done .     Mrs.  Pumphrey's  mansion is now a  hospital  for solders  and apparently one solder returning from  North Africa  brought back a pet snake  which got loose .  Tristan and  Carmody  went looking for him .  Boxed him up and took him to a zoo.   Just could have done with out .  lol

deedee713 wrote a year ago: 1

Not sure which episode of ACG&S, on two channels at the moment, but I hope that cat wasn't really run over for the show. Carmody was learning to drive.

I don't like animals being killed for the sake of television in the UK.

Remember  that scene  dee  .......     That cat became Helen's  cat  ......  when James came home from  bomber training he gave that cat away ...  one of the first things he did when he got home was to give his wife's cat away.   There was no  scene  about that to show Helen's reaction .

deedee713 wrote a year ago: 1

Oh phew, thanks solar. I couldn't stick around to see if it lived or died!

But.............he gave the cat away? Why? LOL, guess that would have been another episode I wouldn't have watched.

Like I would let my husband give away a pet of mine. Yeah. Right.

Too bad, I guess I'll stick with the original.

But.............he gave the cat away? Why? LOL,

dee ....  when he was hitchhiking home he was picked up by truck driver who was out looking for his daughter's lost cat .  James thought of him when he made the decision to give them the cat ....   didn't have a scene where he discussed this idea  with Helen  to see if see was  OK with  it .  However , she must have  agreed  , as he was still allowed in the house .  lol

do you have any similar recommendations?

Ah....thanks solar.

I am right with you on the snakes, Solar. I have a little gardener that lives in my front garden area, we co- exist just fine as I see him (or a family member) once a summer if it rains too much and he comes up to the surface. Beyond this size, I am not good. Really not good.

My hubs had to remove a very large one many years ago -  it has to be a least twenty years or more. He sprang in to action - got him up with a shovel, put him in a box and took him to the lake across from our street. He swears though that he could never do that now. The strength of youth gives us courage - we lose that sometimes as we age and mull over things more. He didn't like snakes then, but it was quite large and our neighbor at the time was in a panic - he felt he had to do something and he sprang in to action. If it happens again - because I will not live with anything larger than a garden snake in the front of my house, it would haunt me - I realize I will have to be the one who deals with it. Not a comforting thought.

We had a discussion about the cat last season and I did not buy that Helen gave the cat away willingly. James pushed her in to it with the "poor little girl bit"... she loved that cat and had bonded with it - she's the one who nursed it back to health.

Yes, Deedee, it would be a cold day in hell before I would let anyone take my pet away from me. My husband knows better, he does have to sleep at night and it is hard to get any rest when you have to sleep with one eye opened the rest of your life. 😉🤨

Kaywardon99, I am a fan of "C.B. Strike", too. A new season is coming, it has already aired in the UK (don't know your location, you may have already seen it).

I was reading comments on one of the FB TV pages, and to my surprise, there were mixed reviews about this latest one. It was cut pretty much down the middle regarding how people felt about it. Those that were disappointed said the story was way too dark and convoluted and they didn't enjoy it like seasons in the past. Those are tough words from die heart fans because small bumps in the story are usually taken in stride - and when you have so many people agreeing, it wasn't the odd voice in the crowd - you take notice.

Another similar series... can't quite think of anything at the moment to recommend. There has to be something out there, let me think about it some more.

deedee713 wrote a year ago: 1

Hah! Agreed, Brit. Someone I know, MADE his girlfriend give away her cat before she moved in with him. Yeah, okay, right. Let me see, man.....pet, man....pet.

Not to worry, He Who Must Be Obeyed knows where my loyalties lie.

Brit, I've gone to Britbox, and tried some. Then I've gone to Acorn and tried some. With the same result. I'm very disappointed. Sad.

Oh, and I've watched Van der Valk and I know you all like the show, and I think it would be top notch - location, supporting cast - without Marc Warren. That guy gives me the heebie jeebies. I hope Hendrik doesn't leave.

solar wrote a year ago: 1

Would that be Marc  ' The Leprechaun '  Warren  ???     lol

BritMystery wrote a year ago: 1

Deedee and Solar, you are both on the same page regarding Mark Warren - no love loss there for either of you!

Not sure what is going on with Hendrik, they really left things up in the air with him last season. The man is very sick, unless some huge mistake was made somewhere (which I agree with Solar, has become more doubtful); or as I had mentioned previously, he becomes part of a medicine trial that extends his life over a few more seasons (last episode's plot was directly linked to a new cancer drug trial - maybe that is no coincidence) I don't know how they can backtrack from his illness. Next season will be interesting in this regard.

It is sad. I feel another series slump coming on. Outside of the last season of "Vera", which I have saved because I need to know I have something to look forward to - that is the last of my "heart" series - there is nothing currently available that catches any true interest in me. It is disappointing that there is little new that speaks to me.
