Ratings Roundup Week of October 7, 2018

The CW joined the rest of the networks in the Fall season last week. Only one new show opened for the network. All American did not have the premiere it was hoping for and probably won't last. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is going out with a whimper, its premiere not even reaching half a million viewers. Dynasty opened just as badly as it ended last year. Black Lightning was also down for it's premiere. Supernatural was down a tenth from where it ended last season, viewers apparently want Dean not Michael.

ABC premiered Dancing with the Stars: Juniors last week to low numbers. Not sure how much life the franchise has left in it as the main show is also only doing okay ratings-wise. The network moving Fresh Off The Boat and Speechless to Friday did not do any favors to either program, expect both, along with Child Support, to be cancelled by the end of the season. Station 19 saw a healthy bump from its premiere, bucking the trend of most shows so far this season. A Million Little Things was steady, that's the good news. The bad news is it's still on the low side and needs to come up a bit if it wants to survive. Single Parents was steady.

CBS handed out its first full season order to FBI last week, making it the first of the rookie shows to get some good news. Expect full season orders for Murphy Brown and Magnum PI as well, all are sitting right at the network average. God Friended Me lost a good chunk of its premiere audience, no surprise as there was no NFL overrun to help, however the show should be fine assuming it doesn't lose any more viewers. Madam Secretary premiered right where it ended last year.

NBC also gave its first full season order to a rookie show last week. New Amsterdam fans can rest easy they will get at least one full season, and probably a few more after that. Manifest also had another strong week, it lost a couple of tenths but should be fine. Blindspot premiered low, down a tenth from where it ended last season. Without the automatic renewal for syndication, the show is probably done at the end of this season. I Feel Bad, won't have to for much longer, the show is not long for the world.

FOX had a nice week last week. The Simpsons gained five tenths from its premiere, another show to buck the second week blues. Bob's Burgers was up a tenth while Family Guy was down a tenth. Empire, Star, and Last Man Standing all gained a tenth. Lethal Weapon lost a tenth but gained two additional episodes for the season. Rel lost another tenth and is probably not going to see the end of the season.

We are now in the weeks where ratings will level off and full season orders are given (or not) to the rookies. Are your favorite new shows going to still be around come May?

@gmpugs Agree 100% on the overt messaging on Supergirl or any show for that matter. I remember being turned off by Cosby & Designing Women when they went from the subtle messaging to a more in your face method. IMHO these shows are best when they entertain with a subtle social message that sneaks in to the sub-conscious and rattles around for awhile making people think about their beliefs and actions. It's the old carrot vs stick argument.

gmpugs posted 5 years ago

I don't know about Supergirl. They seem to be getting over the top with the social justice warrior/political stuff on it in my opinion that it's getting to be a turn-off. While I like to think of myself as an open minded person, the overly political stuff is starting to really make me consider to stop watching.

Flash, Black Lightning, and Riverdale are all safe. Supergirl probably is as well.

No need to worry about Young Sheldon, it will most likely become the top rated comedy for CBS once BBT ends. Mom is also an easy renewal.

I don't think any actor contracts are up for Five-0 at the end of this season. So unless the rating absolutely tank, it should get another year. (we can start the pool to see if it will make it longer than the original!) And I'm sure Lenkov is salivating at the chance to do Magnum/Five-0 crossovers ...

God Friended Me is a weird one to predict. It gets a lot of help from NFL overruns (like last night) so it's numbers bounce from amazing high to network average depending on when the football game ended. It should get a full season order just from that help. The dye will be set in January when it no longer has the extra help.

I have a feeling 3 of the shows I watch and like that premiered could still be around (Flash, Black Lightning, Riverdale) in May. I was about to mention Supergirl's premiere, but remembered that it was last night/this week (along with Arrow and then Legends next week). :P I already know Big Bang Theory is ending this year, so I'm hoping Young Sheldon and Mom stick around for another year (at least). Maybe Hawaii Five-0 too. I guess it would depend on what the actors want to do, right? And I hope God Friended Me sticks around, though I won't hold my breath while its episodes still air.
