Ratings Roundup for the Week of May 8, 2022

Most networks announced renewals and cancellations last week in the lead-up to this week's upfronts. More than a few surprise cancellations were announced along with some head-scratcher renewals.

The CW, the network known for rubber-stamping series renewals, led the bloodbath of network cancellations, ending eleven shows last week. Surprise cancellations include Naomi, Batwoman, and Legends of Tomorrow. Not so surprising, is Dynasty, a show that only continued thanks to an influx of NetFlix money that has now dried up. The other reason for so many cancellations is likely tied to the pending sale of the network, and both CBS and Warners pulling back on the content they provide.

ABC announced eight cancellations last week, though none were much of a surprise. Black-ish was in its final season, while Queens and Promised Land never stood a chance. The only cancellation of note is Dancing with the Stars, as the network plans to move the series to Disney+. So far, streamers have mostly stayed away from competition shows, preferring more traditional fare. This may be a sign Disney is interested in tapping a new market for subscribers. As for renewals, A Million Little Things managed to pull off another renewal, likely to pump up the episode count for syndication. The Wonder Years will see a second season, though if it wants a third it will have to improve its low audience numbers. Big Sky announced not only a renewal but the addition of Jenson Ackles to the cast. Time will tell if the Supernatural fans will follow him to the new show.

CBS announced six cancellations last week, the most surprising being Magnum PI. The rebooted series starring Jay Hernandez and Perdita Weeks was a stable rating workhorse of the Friday night lineup, and the cancellation probably had more to do with production contracts than ratings numbers. Less of a surprise was the news How We Roll would not be back for a second season. Scripted shows with Spring premieres, rarely get renewed. The network also cancelled United States of Al after two seasons, further paring down its roster of sitcoms. On the renewal side, CBS announced the three FBI shows will all return for the next two seasons. As for ratings, Come Dance With Me lost another hundred thousand viewers and is likely done.

NBC must have decided to toss a coin to figure out which of its lackluster comedies to keep and which ones to cancel. Young Rock and Grand Crew won the renewal toss while Kenan and Mr Mayor lost. Freshman dramas, The Endgame and Ordinary Joe were also cancelled. No real surprise for either show. New Amsterdam was renewed for a fifth and final season. As for ratings, American Song Contest wrapped its first season last week. It picked up four hundred thousand viewers for its finale, but chances are that's too little too late.

FOX kept mum on its renewal plans last week. The network did announce that freshman series'  The Big Leap, Pivoting, and Our Kind Of People were all officially cancelled. In ratings news, back-to-back episodes of Welcome To Flatch were down several hundred thousand more viewers from the previous week. Domino Masters wrapped its first season, low, losing three hundred thousand viewers. Duncanville shed two hundred thousand viewers from its premiere. Hard to see how the network will bother with a fourth season.
