Born in Austin, Texas, Dabney Coleman entered the Virginia Military Institute in 1949, in 1953 he was called up by the US Army and served in Europe. He was studying law at the University of Texas when he discovered he had a talent for acting and enrolled at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater in New York. He kicked off his nearly 60 year career in a 1961 episode of Naked City, followed in 1962 with guest appearances in 3 episodes of Armstrong Circle Theatre. In 1965 he landed his first movie role as Charlie in The Slender Thread.
