Born in New York City, New York, Tovah Feldshuh was a student at the National Music Camp, and graduated from Sarah Lawrence College. She began her career at the Guthrie Theater, first appearing on the stage under the name Terri Fairchild. Her Broadway debut was in the 1973 musical Cyrano, as was her television debut as Agnes Thornton in Scream, Pretty Peggy. In 1976 she landed the recurring role of Martha McKee in the daytime soap Ryan's Hope.
