Born in Havana, Cuba, Steven Bauer and his family emigrated from Cuba in 1960,shortly after the end of the Cuban Revolution, settling in Miami, Florida. He studied acting at Miami Dade Community College and then continued at the University of Miami. He began his career on a PBS sitcom in 1977, portraying Joe Peña, the son of Cuban immigrants on ¿Qué Pasa, USA?, credited as Rocky Echevarria.
