Born in Buffalo, New York, Kyle Chandler graduated from George Walton Academy in Georgia and was a member of the 1979 state championship football team. While studying drama at the University of Georgia he was spotted by a talent scout and moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. His first on-screen appearances were small roles in the 1988 TV movies Quiet Victory: The Charlie Wedemeyer Story, followed in 1989 with Unconquered. He played a supporting role in the 1989 Home Fires Burning, and made guest appearances on China Beach and Freddy's Nightmares before becoming a regular on the already established TV series Tour of Duty in 1990.
