TVRage gone for good or not

Wow. I randomly tried going there for the first time in forever just to see how everyone was. The ones who were still left at least. But to be honest, I'm not too surprised. The activity had gone wayyyyy down from what I've seen, and the writing had been on the wall for years. In a way, I saw this coming and am actually surprised it didn't happen sooner. Which sucks because the site had such a great start and loyal fan base the first three years or so, and was pretty active. After that it just got blander and blander and was never able to make a comeback.
I have no idea who's who here, and am not even sure who'd remember me from the old days (if anybody). I was posting from the beginning in 2005, (which is also a major bummer as I distinctly remember I had joined around Christmas that year and was SO fucking close to the ten year mark Lol) , and probably stopped coming regularly around 2008. Regulars were just dropping like flies and it just wasn't as fun anymore. Was wisecrack still running the place when it croaked? Anybody hear from him? Puremaria? Ryan? Supercool? I'm pretty sure some of these people were still *occasionally* posting there the last time I popped in. It was right around this time last year, actually. I think.
Kinda shitty to build up a community for a decade to then just drop off the face of the earth without even giving us so much as a pleasant go fuck yourselves. Seb was still the owner through and through, right? Damn man, talk about going out with a whimper...
Anyways, I've only taken a quick glance at this place, but if anybody from the rage recognizes me and wants to catch up feel free to shoot me a PM. :

Hello there Rsetter3 and welcome to the future! I do not remember that username over there were you using a different one? Anyways I worked over there for 12 years up until the day it exploded so I'm sure you had seen my name over there quite often?

I'm not sure when you tried to access Rage last/most recently but they went down on 6 or 8 September this year and have not been back up since and probably never will be as they are Dead in the Water!

Hopefully they will not take forever to allow members to send PM's because it has been some time now since the subject was brought up?

I don't know if they will ever brother to provide us with a list of member names over here or not as I asked for 3 months ago?

I have been a patient in the Hospital way too many times over the last 3 years, 13 times to be exact and it's not fun!

yeah man I used the exact same user name over there. Your name does look familiar. I was pretty active right when it first came out in 2005, and everyone flocked from tv.com after it took over tv tome. But like I said, I stopped coming regularly around 2008 or so, and only popped in here and there just to see how the few familiar faces were doing. Last time I popped in before this was around this time last year as far as I remember. I randomly had the impulse two weeks ago to check it out again just for the hell of it and saw it was down. Initially I thought it was either down for maintenance or some kind of bug issue, but then when I did a little more digging I found this place.

Just find it rather dickish they couldn't give the few people left there so much as a heads up or a proper goodbye. I mean you build the site up for a whole decade and just pull the plug and go awol? That's a huge middle finger to the people that made the site what it was.

Was it still the same people running the place? I knew wisecrack was still modding it, and as far as I'm aware seb was always the owner, but I'm not sure if there was some kind of switch up while I was away. Would love to know what a lot of the others guys are up to nowadays. I know there were a few familiar people still posting there on occasion last I checked. But for the most part, unfortunately, the site looked like it was on its last leg anyways...

Ron, I am not talking about a patient in a hospital, I am talking about being a bit more patient till the pm system is implemented, I guess you misunderstood me :)

cheers

They claim Seb was still in charge but the last 2 years he was virtually invisible at least to me anyways. I sent him well over 20 PM's in the last 2 years trying to ask him things and he never responded to even 1 of them. I was told he was too busy to respond to anyone's PM's but I felt that was very rude that he couldn't at least say that himself. Ben was the 2nd in command for the past 5 or so years and the only other staff I ever head from after Tom left without notice was Gadfly who came over here about a month after I did.

You are correct that no one ever said anything to anyone about what was going on or what had happened. There were a few tweets but not hardly anything was said, no apology, no explanation as to what happened and only excuses that they had no idea what happened, yeah right, sure they didn't my ass!

They didn't give a damn about their members or they would have said something!

May I add my opinion,

Nobody is mentioning the elephant in the room...

In the global sense, the powers that be, are working hard to undermine the stability of the "free system" we all seem to love so much... Given that there have been many site takedowns and some real teeth in the way it's being done, (prison and economic sanctions), I dont blame the owners of TvRage for running for the hills...

An Achilles heel in the "free system", is the use of data sites like TvRage, (and TvMaze). TvRage is not the first to run, just the latest...

There are many many sites out there making personal gains on the information we provide, with an understanding that contributiters are protected. They all say they will protect their uploaders... But who knows...

No apology, no explanation as to what happened... welcome to the real world

We are not here to contribute to a cure for cancer...

-YKJack- (pesky2012)

P.S. I appreciate this site and will work hard to keep it up to date, as best I can, (as I did at TvRage)...

To the best of my knowledge, and as far as anyone else here who would have any inkling has said, TVRage never folded up because of legal threats.

Speaking as a relative insider, and going by one-third inside knowledge, one-third talking to others, and one-third speculation, I'd say that the site shut down mostly because a) the owner was having ongoing medical issues (both physical and mental, which he mentioned publicly from time to time so I'm not giving anyway any confidences), and B) it wasn't making enough money to cover its expenses.

TVRage was my "go to" site for quick searches for information on shows and especially to find news on both new (or expected to be released) and cancelled shows. For what I needed, TVRage was a one-stop shop so I didn't have to go to multiple sites to find the information I wanted.

It's speculation on my part but if a site like TVRage is down for more than 72 hours it is likely on purpose and not due to a server problem. If TVRage was hosting their servers in-house and there was a server failure and they weren't backup and running in 48 hours that would mean they had no hardware redundancy (failrover servers), access to hardware, didn't have backups, or did not have a recovery plan.

If TVRage was using any type of cloud based hosting service (which would make more sense) then the hosting service is responsible for keeping the site up and running at an absolute minimum uptime of 99.5%. So, almost 3 months later, the more likely answer is whoever owned the site no longer wanted to operate the site or simply ran out of money. The occasional hint that the site would be back felt more like a delaying tactic (maybe they were looking for funding) in case they could revive the site.

I like the TVMaze structure. It is cleaner, less cluttered, and not as "busy" as TVRage. I signed up to TVMaze today and created a calender of shows that I watch and the process was quick and painless. As a plus, while I was searching for shows to add to my list I discovered an old show and an upcoming show of which I was not previously aware. Also browsed through a few of the Articles and the Forum. I like that there are no unnecessary distractions here which makes the site much more pleasant to browse through.

If you're having issues with anything on the site and you'd like to see a better implementation. Then talking about it and making suggestions is the best way to make it happen. Just a simple 'nope' isn't really helpful to anyone without elaboration.

Hi rsetter3 I was a member at Tv Tome and TV Rage. I remember you. I was regular during 2005 and 2006 but drifted away. I did check on occasion and found the website increasing dead with regards to forum activity. I don't think it worked anywhere near as well as TV Tome. I use IMDB a lot but don't like Tv.com

I think there were issues between certain members such as Sebrioth, Ben21, Tikidawg, John Q.Public and Murdock. I remember John Q.Public and Murdock both quit as well as MoggIntellect. Apparently Sebrioth had drug problems and Ben21 took advantage of him. I remember many users such as Super_cool, Wisecrack, Puremaria, KingJohn23, Andrew, Melody, BradG, Grailwolf, Rebelman, Ryan, Mirrorkirby, Manson rules, Idiot, Me, Blae, Evil, Gus, MorbidMuch, Sailor Yue, Checkmate, Macdeacon, FuManchu and others. I found KingJohn23 and Melody on youtube as well as Sailor Yue. They are all on facebook as well.

I don't blame John for selling TV Tome and Movie Tome. Five million dollars is a lot of money. But tv.com just doesn't appeal to me. Many forums are dead for the tv shows I like. If you want to email me here's my address - 70sscenario@gmail.com

I remember these 2 staff members John Q.Public and Murdock early on were big huge jerks and had been reported to Ben & Seb & I think Roger if he was not also Seb? If they quit is was because they had so many members complain about them over and over and over again but the way i remember it they didn't quit but were sacked because all of the complaints. Some of it is a blur to me because it was in the early 2000's but one of those 2 idiots Banned me from the site for a year but after 90 days I got an apology letter from 1 of the 3 I mentioned telling me that either John Q or Murdock was no longer there and they had no right banning me and i was welcome back with open arms which I did. This was way before your time Gadfly you may not have even known any of this?

Anyways during my ban I tried out tv.com and i also hated it there as it was way to messy and cluttered and terrible policies, terrible mean abusive staff!

Gadfly wrote 9 years ago: 1

I only became a regular staff member at TVRage in 2013, so I wasn't involved in any politics before then. Some of the back-and-forth conversations were on the staff forums as a bunch of old posts, but nothing was particularly clear.

(And I wasn't involved in much politics after 2013, either. I'm not big on politics. ;) )

My impression was that many members left because... well, that's what happens. Folks get going, folks get interested, folks lose interest, folks move on. The forums were relatively slow, yes, but then again, stuff like Facebook and Twitter and social media in general have supplanted the forum structure to a large degree.

And part of it is... well, general TV scheduling sites really aren't the best place to discuss shows on forums. If I want to discuss Doctor Who, I'll go to the BBC site. Or a major Doctor Who community. Or a Doctor Who facebook page. At a site like TVRage (or TVMaze) where you have thousands of shows, your odds of finding a large group of people interested in the same single show as you and willing to discuss it knowledgeably and constantly are pretty slim. There's nothing worse than posting in a show forum, having it appear on the front page because it's an "active" forum, and having crickets chirp as no one responds... and no one responds... and no one responds...

So a lot of the forums at TVRage were dead because... well, a lot of them were show forums, and there weren't very many show/fan communities there.

Some people at TV Tome didn't like John Q. and Murdock. I remember John Q. Public being editor for Sliders (one show of many that I like) and Murdock editor for 3rd rock from the sun (another one that I like). I also remember lot of spammers at both sites. MP55, moldytoaster, SteamEngines, ImAShark.

If you couldn't already figure it out I also hated them both very much myself because of their attitudes and actions and a lot of invalid rejections of submissions just because they wanted to and could. I wish I had 1/2 the memory for names like you as I'm lucky to remember about 5 or 6 total?
