TVRage gone for good or not

deleted wrote 9 years ago: 1

Guys, shall we stick to discussing about TVrage itself and not about specific people that used to contribute over there? There might be people over there that many of you did not like, however they are human beings too and have their own thoughts. We are not a gossip magazine.

Thanks!

That is very interesting indeed David. Thanks for not being upset with us (especially me) for discussing a possible return and in-turn competition although I do not think this site will suffer because it has so many other nicer things then rage has or most like ever will have. They have always been very slow in making improvements and you make them over here several times every day plus you listen to most of your members and their requests or suggestions was never happened over there I can truthfully say from a 11 year experience working over there!

I used TVRage for its list of US and UK shows is there such a list here

You can use filters to determine the nation you want to look for in the show section :)

Okay, while I had pretty much given up on TVRage, I have been compelled to check the site every time I open my browser. Just curious. As one would expect, it's pretty much been nothing for about two months. However, I just checked and got this odd message:

Dear Visitor,

Due to a security issue and an intrusion within our network, potential illegal activity went unnoticed in the background.
This was discovered due to a higher amount of data traffic being used.
That since begin September research has been done, although slowly to find out this activity and we had a few road bumps,
but are pleased to announce TVRage is going to be back online soon, changes are planned for the future. We invite you to revisit the website and think about contributing,
and hope a bit more patients can be asked for more chances to come,
the investigation is still ongoing but TVRage is secure to put online.

Regards,

TVRage Team

On one hand, I'm a little hopeful (emphasis on the word "little") because after so much time off, I'd figure no one would bother unless they were sincerely trying to get it back up and operational. On the other hand, we've been through this before. I'll also say it's not a good sign that they've misspelt "patience" (and was "chances" meant to be "changes"?) and that second paragraph starts oddly worded. And the whole thing about security issues and all seems a bit iffy. At this point, I'm not holding my breath. I'll believe it only when I see it.

Sebrioth doesn't speak English as a native language. So it sounds very much like his style.

That said, it'd be nice to know who the "team" is. An undated unsigned notice isn't very helpful or hopeful.

It was sold gadfly, Sebrioth is no longer the owner according to davids link.

I didn't say otherwise The question is, who is the new team? And if Sebrioth is still involved with the site.

You don't think the message at TVrage.com sounds like Sebrioth?

I think Staff member Blae is from the Netherlands perhaps Sebrioth is as well? I think there was a staff member DonnieDarko from Germany.

Gadfly wrote 9 years ago: 1

Depends on what you mean by "team" and "staff". Many of us were volunteer staff members. Myself included. But I was never a part of any design or programming or writing "team." Blae I think was similar, but I could be wrong. Donnie was a staff member for a while, or at least a volunteer with special privileges. You'd have to ask him what he did.

But then, as people may have gathered from the lack of notification about what happened to TVRage, communication was not Sebrioth's forte. I (and Jaguardog, who has noted several times that Seb never got back to him) was the exception. ;)

I've heard Webmaster John at TV Tome often ignored emails from people and also had trust issues. Supposedly the three founders of epguides had no idea he'd sold the site in January 2005 to CNET. Thing is those who added to TV Tome and Movie Tome didn't have to. They did so by choice. Some were angry and hostile when they heard the news but I don't blame him for selling. The sites were full of spammers and flamers and he got a lot of abuse. When TV Tome was gone but Movie Tome was still up John created a thread trying to get editors for movie guides and I remember John Q. Public and Murdock posting comments. I think they basically told him no one likes him and no one wants to bother contributing to Movie Tome.

One user of note is MP55. I've heard he was a member for about two years. He was editor for guides and posted a lot. Many were friendly with him and then he started spamming and gaining access to accounts. I think he deleted numerous guides and deleted entire forums such as the TV Tome General Forums. I once contacted him and he told me he thought the site to be a waste of time and that all the people were douche bags (his words). He created many accounts to spam with and also gained access to Debate Kingdom a site used by users such as KingJohn23, Rebelman, FuManchu, Manson_rules, Dr. Bango, Melody, BatmanBeyonder, Abberly, BradG, Alphawolf and others. He deleted all the posts and threads and messed up the site. I remember on TV Rage KingJohn23 described MP55 as being vindictive and that he sent a rude message to Webmaster John at TVTome and got his guides taken away from him.

I was a reader of the TV Tome Buffy forums and remember users grailwolf, Mr. Nasty, AuntArlene, PyleansDontLeaveMe. JohnQ.Public was editor of Sliders and from TVRage I remember users such as tikidawg who was a staff member for a while, atecom, holophonor, MirrorKirby. MirrorKirby told me he was a spammer at TV Tome and did it because he found it funny, people took it too seriously. One time my account was banned at TV Tome, I don't know why, but I created another. I got an email, something like, no one likes you or wants you here. Go away, go somewhere else. It was from Webmaster John. I don't know why I got banned or why he sent that message.

Nope, it sounds more like some person who is pretty bad at English, Sebrioth was good at English :)

Not in the posts I saw, or the PMs I received. For someone that English was a second language for, he was good. But patience = patients was the kind of mistake he made a couple of times.

FYI, the message has changed again, although it still has a homonym misspellling in it. (bear = bare)

JAGUARDOG wrote 9 years ago: 1

Excuse me guys and gals but has anyone ever seen this message before? -

Dear Visitor, TVRage will be online soon again, please bare with us, thank you for your support
Regards, TVRage Team

I like to try once a month just to see if anyone may have bought the site and may be trying to bring it back on line? It may be a very old message from many, many months ago that I have never seen before and was in the twilight zone for all those months? Any ideas where it came from?

Gadfly wrote 9 years ago: 1

The message is an update of the one referenced above that Juan and myself commented on. As of this writing, it's 9 days old, so... sometimes in the last 9 days, it was updated to the text you quote, with the bear=bear typo I mentioned earlier.

Morning_Star wrote 9 years ago: 1

At least they got the TVRage logo back. It's been ages since I've seen that.

I still don't understand what's been going on with the site and who's actually go the reigns now. Seems it's just a big waiting game since they don't want to give us any approximate timetable for its return.

Morning_Star wrote 9 years ago: 1

I felt I should be the one to report... TVRage has returned. Yes, it actually happened.
