Ratings Roundup for the Week of November 13, 2022

1078714.jpg

CBS returned last week with a slate of new episodes after a week of mostly reruns. Fire Country was down one hundred thousand viewers but is likely safe. East New York lost another two hundred thousand viewers and could be in trouble. After a good beginning, viewers appear to have lost interest in the show. So Help Me Todd was preempted for a pickleball tournament, which dropped two hundred thousand viewers in the same slot. Blue Bloods lost three hundred thousand viewers last week. It's doing okay for a Friday night show, so its renewal will likely be based more on cast and crew interest rather than sheer numbers.  SWAT picked up a ratings tenth, though its viewer numbers were unchanged. It should be safe for another year.

ABC filled a number of schedule hours with news interviews or movies last week. Of the remaining regular programming, Abbott Elementary was down two hundred thousand viewers after a week off. The Goldbergs and Home Economics each picked up one hundred thousand viewers. The Rookie: Feds shed another three hundred thousand viewers it couldn't afford. Chances are it's done after this season. Alaska Daily lost another hundred thousand viewers and remains the lowest-rated show on the network. Its chances for renewal are slim. Big Sky was even but low. Fans should probably be concerned about its future as well as it doesn't have enough episodes to trigger an automatic renewal.

NBC saw a nice ratings return last week. The Chicago shows were all up last week, as were the three Law & Order shows. Each was up by three hundred thousand viewers or more. La Brea returned after an off week, down two hundred thousand viewers. Lopez vs Lopez was up one hundred thousand viewers. Young Rock was steady but low.

FOX was a mixed bag of ratings last week. The Sunday animation block benefited from an NFL overrun, and all four shows were up compared to their last new episodes a couple of weeks ago. 9-1-1 lost one hundred thousand viewers but is in no danger. The Resident and The Cleaning Lady were both down by three hundred thousand viewers. Both will likely be renewed, but The Resident is in its sixth season. It wouldn't be much of a surprise if next season is its last. Monarch lost another two hundred thousand viewers it couldn't afford and will likely limp off into the sunset. Welcome to Flatch found an additional one hundred thousand viewers last week. Call Me Kat was even.

The CW's new owners announced they would be carrying ten current WB/CBS shows into next season. After that, they would be running "their own playbook" of content. Let the betting begin on which currently running shows will slip through for one last hurrah next season. (don't forget there are still two freshman shows yet to premiere, and a scattering of older shows that will begin airing after the holidays.) All American picked up one hundred thousand viewers last week to claim the top spot on the chart. The Winchesters returned after a week off, down two hundred thousand viewers. Walker: Independence continued to have steady numbers.  Penn & Teller: Fool Us was up one hundred thousand viewers. Kung Fu was steady.

I wouldn't be surprised if Warners and Berlanti team up for something on HBOMax.

@Charmedones_Prue, @RoseRed:

There are two projects executive produced by Berlanti that have received a series order from HBO Max and are based on DC properties: Dead Boy Detectives and Green Lantern. A third one, Strange Adventures, had also received a series order but that order was later rescinded. Several other projects have been pitched to the network, so there may be more in-development series in the future where Berlanti is also involved.

Ahh yeah, it seems the superhero phase has run its course (at least on over-the-air TV). Disney+ has a variety of Marvel shows, and I wouldn't be surprised if Warners and Berlanti team up for something on HBOMax.

There is still at least one more season of Superman & Lois, and CW execs are still promising to get Gotham Knights on the air in a few months. What happens after that ... who knows.

Yes HBOMax and Disney+ are among my streaming subscriptions

The main CBS network isn't going anywhere. So nothing to worry about there.

As for The CW network, it was an amalgamation of two smaller networks (the WB and UPN) which merged in the mid-2000s to become The CW. All of the programs on the CW were produced by either Warner Brothers or CBS Productions (in as even of a split as they could manage). Even though the network didn't make any money, the production companies (Warners and CBS) did, through DVD sales, syndication deals, and the like so they didn't particularly care about ratings numbers or advert sales.

Part of what NexStar wants to do is expand who they buy content from, in theory as a way to save money and make the network profitable. Time will tell.

So The CW does not run a full schedule. They air two hours of content per night as opposed to three. So with that math, they need 14 hours of content per week. The Canadian shows have the advantage of being cheap since the US is a secondary distribution market, so assuming they haven't been cancelled by the Canadian networks, I can see them sticking around another year just to plug holes.

As for what's left over from the WB and CBS contracts you have:
All American
All American: Homecoming
Criss Angel's Magic with the Stars
** Gotham Knights
Kung Fu
Masters Of Illusion
Penn & Teller: Fool Us
** Recipe For Disaster
Superman & Lois
Walker
Walker: Independence
The Winchesters
World's Funniest Animals

So far nothing has been renewed, but the following shows have already been cancelled:
The Flash
Nancy Drew
Riverdale
Stargirl
Whose Line

My guess is the following are the safest for a renewal:
All American
All American: Homecoming
Penn & Teller: Fool Us
Walker

Walker: Independence and The Winchesters both pull consistent numbers and could get a second season just off of the name recognition of Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki for the network, but the fact there was no back nine order was telling.

Gotham Knights is a tough call. It's the type of show the new owner has already said they don't want since it caters to a younger-skewing audience. Depending on how the contracts were written, it's possible the WB will air the first season on CW and then move it to HBOMax if Nexstar doesn't want it. Frankly, Recipe for Disaster sounds ridiculous, and may never see the light of day.

Kung Fu could go either way.
Superman & Lois is likely done, it would be the only superhero show left on the network
World's Funniest Animals has the benefit of being cheap (but it's only 30 minutes)
Masters of Illusion and Criss Angel never pulled the audience of Penn & Teller, but I could see the possibility of putting them on a Saturday just to plug holes

Masters of Illusion, Mysteries Decoded, and Penn & Teller: Fool Us will probably be renewed, whereas Criss Angel's Magic with the Stars and World's Funniest Animals probably won't. Recipe for Disaster has yet to premiere, so it could go either way. It remains to be seen what they'll do with the imports, but most likely they are done.
