Born in New York City, Sarah Hyland began in the business at age 4 with commercial work and voice overs. Her first film role was in 1997, as the daughter of Howard Stern in Private Parts. Moving to Los Angeles at age 18, she quickly landed a role in a pilot named My American Family, which when picked up was changed to Modern Family.
