Born in Mbabane, Swaziland, Richard E. Grant studied drama at Cape Town University, arrived in London in 1982, trained on a series of regional British dialects and began his acting career on stage. His first movie was an award winning TV production called Honest, Decent and True, and this lead to his lead role in the classic comedy Withnail and I.
