Born in Auckland, Rhys Darby left the New Zealand army in 1994 and began studying art theory at Canterbury University. Come 1996, he formed the comedy duo Rhysently Granted with Grant Lobban. In 2005 he appeared as multiple characters in the comedy TV movie Who's Ya Mate?, and in 2007 landed the role of Murray Hewitt in Flight of the Conchords.
